Guest Paul [MVP] Posted September 30, 2003 Report Posted September 30, 2003 Just installed Mozilla Firebird from Mozilla.org... Feels very fast indeed, I like! P
Guest siu99spj Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 Just to drag this even further off topic O:) I personally like something called Avant Browser. Its quicker than IE (Although its actually based on IE), has an INTELLIGENT pop-up stopper (Don't ask me HOW it works but it does), supports tabbed windows (Something I loved in Mozilla/Phoenix) and its got a search bar installed. All in all a perfect piece of software ;)/
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 Tabbed windows has to be the way to go, amazed it hasn't made it into IE yet... P
Guest [email protected] Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 What are tabbed windows?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 Download Firebird and see ;p
Guest siu99spj Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 What are tabbed windows? Tabbed windows are by far the nicest thing ever invented for a browser. Basically, rather than having umpteen thousand IE windows, cluttering up your start bar (Expecially if you get a pop-up frenzy), you just have the one for your browser. Then, inside the main browser window, you have something like a mini-start bar which has each of your browsing windows. I especially like Avant as it allows you to open links in a new tab, just by middle(wheel)-clicking on them. It also opens all links in stuff like E-Mails and IM in new windows, rather than changing your existing Window, as IE was popular for doing. And did I mention the intelligent pop-up stopper? I've yet to find a pop-up stopper or browser capable of doing the same so effectively (i.e. It will allow the Modaco pop-up about having a PM. It won't allow an advert pop-up at Extremetech). Give it a go, its completely free and looks so like IE you'll feel at home in no time!
Guest Palindrome Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 How does it compare to opera 7.20?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 Opera is boated now. Tabbed browsing: Not such a large concern now XP groups windows Popup stopper: Presumably has a built in list of adware-type sites (similar to porn blockers and netnanny-alikes) that it compares the popup url to before allowing...
Guest spacemonkey Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 Well, also a popup stopper built into the browser is going to accurately know whether a window opening is the result of a click or the result of a naughty script. Some external popup stoppers eg "Pop-up stopper" just stop any new windows opening unless you are holding a key down (like shift) nice solution. But since Avant Browser is the place you are clicking urls to open new windows it would know that the new window is specifically caused by you clicking url www.x.com target=_blank etc. That's my limited understanding of it anyway.
Guest Vector Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 I am using avant browser now, very nice ;) loving the tabbed windows :D/
Guest Vector Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Firefox 0.8 rocks! sooo fast especially when you enable pipelining and do a few other tweaks :)
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Would you say it was significantly quicker than IE6 with google toolbar? Is it quicker with downloading the pages, or just rendering them?
Guest Vector Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Well for me pages load around 2-3 seconds quicker :)
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 i'm using it ....NOW.... it's ok. but i'm not overly impressed yet.
