Stoopid question #385: description of color_xyz in home.xml

I know this is a bit of a newbie question, but I'm trying to create my first homescreen and kinda struggling with the color settings. I have tried a search but homescreen brings up about a million hits!

Is there a list somewhere that will tell me what part of the screen each of the color settings in the XML file applies to?

I've played around, but I wound up with black text on a black background which wasn't really the effect I was after!
