SPV snapping Keyboard... is it possible?

I was wondering if there could be a ms smartphone with a snap back keyboard like the nokia 6800? I know many of you would want this as it would make typing even long messages simple.

Two questions popped in my mind though though, does nokia have some sort of patent on that idea? (could they?) And would it work on the smarphone since it has a rectangle screen? (nokia has a square screen so rotating it it is still the same dimensions. I dont think it would be too tough to make the necessary programs shortened and widened to fit the screen. What are your thoughts?

Just to get an idea of how cool it would be, i made this mockup image

Great mock-up!

But anyhoo, I voted no - in my experience the mechanisms on these type of devices are just too prone to long term failure - I like my phone to feel solid as a rock. (I even stuck a lil bit of BlueTack on my E100's battery to stop the dreaded 'jiggle').

I probably would, qwerty rocks. Dunno how it would fit in with MS hardware specs though ;)

Even the slider on my old nokia 7110 didnt escape - once those contacts get dusted up, damp, sticky, loose or worn you can forget it. I like solid phones - besides - who could touch type on keys that small anyway !

I still have my unlocked 7110 as my backup phone, as a just in case. It isn't just the matrixy slider/spring thing that has problems, but it is also the navi-roller, due to all the crap that gets behind it, in the same way as a PC mouse, though a PC mouse is easy to clean out. Nokia dropped the navi-roller idea after the 7110.

Looks good but i doubt very much it would be useable with one hand which breaks the MS Smartphone LAW!

I heard that the Nokia 7110 returns for the slider coming off, becoming loose, cutting people off was immense, and that after that particular model Nokia went back to the no frills keybad.

The new nokia with the flip keypad is novel but it'll no doubt suffer the same woes.

I wouldn't go for anything like this.

I'm a big fan of T9 together with traditional keyboard layouts. Using a standard numerical layout together with T9 combines the practicaility of pocketability with a fair amount of speed (once you're used to it).

It's a shame that so many phones seem to be going away from the standard layout now - Nokia in particular are guilty of this. I think it started with the 7210, which has a strange key layout, then the 3650, which has a ridiculous layout - now they've got the stupid-looking 3G Nokia 7600. Completely fscks the usability.

i thought the flip open keyboard idea was dumb and would be hard to use too, but I tried it out at the store and its great. It's simple to type with it, the keys are nice and big, you can type really fast, its solid feeling, it snaps open strongly, and it closes up to look like any normal phone.

i cant help but feel envious of it every time i want to enter more than 3 words into my smartphone. thats what prompted this thread & mock up picture. I would love to see a company at least make one ms smartphone device like this. judging by the poll at least half of the smartphone users want one (id assume more would if they actually tried it)

I voted yes. Even if it means the screen would be black on the sides or cut off at the bottom (scrollable) when the image rotates on the non-square smartphone screen.

And..I was really surprised at how solid the phone feels. My friend has one and I expected it to feel loose and flimsy. It's really more solid than you would think.

well we're one step closer with the VOQ:

i just hope that flip open keyboard is as easy to use as nokias. it's not the ideal flip keyboard, but its a start!
