Guest rakwala Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 I was just wandering when i was using msn mesenger on SPV, if at all microsoft can come up with new software that can allow the users of SPV to upgrade their messenger. This mesenger should have the web cam discusion which is available on msn 6.0, as our spv  have a camera and gprs can transmit frames so why not upgrade software that can allow to talk person to person. Is there any site that can provide this software if it is out, if not than microsoft should take my advice and work for this, as it can make net meeting in hand and useable no matter where you are???
Guest PsychoDave Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 Just curious but how do we see each other if the camera faces forward and the screen is at the other side :? Don't get me wrong it's a good idea but practically I don't see how it could work. Unless we all caried mirrors around with us....... ;) Hope you prove me wrong though :D
Guest neilfenstein Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 Didnt microsoft already release a program for smartphone that does video conferencing? Oh and there is already a cable that you can connect between the cam and the fone a bit like the nokia cam so that you can turn the camera round.
Guest pisquee Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 Microsoft Portrait is the software. And looking at the pics of the SD camera for the Moto phone about to come out, it looks like that camera swivels, so it can face the right way. So, theoretically, if the drivers are available seperately from the phone, or someone can get them off the phone, then anyone with an MS smartphone could be able to use the Moto SD camera, and thus have video phone calls! (the moto hardware may differ in a way that makes using their SD card on a diff MS Smartphone not possible.)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 The biggest problem is the speed don't forget the camera only uses a serial connection so it's too slow to be used really ;)
Guest MECX Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 GPRS would cost to much and would be to slow---maybe problems as well because it works in 'bursts' --so it would be no where near real time
Guest Greywolf_Ghost Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 There is a Smartphone version. I am sure the thought crossed the minds of the developers. As stated in a past post the video would not be real time, however it would update at a regular rate. ( ex. 1 frame every 15 seconds ). So you could have a picture chat. The tech bugs are still being worked out. For anyone who wants to look into this further here is the research site. http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/
Guest glynton Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 I think MSN Messenger could potentially be one of the most valuable apps on the phone, especially in conjunction with a camera. There must be so many uses for a real-time messaging program. Specifically file sending, IP telephony, etc.
Guest MECX Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 will be good when 3g come in --or on a Wifi network--now that would be cool

Is there anyone working on making newer versions of messenger, with support for some of these uses. Maybe they'll start on that once they get it working again. Matt
