1.6 Update when?

Guest theodotcom

having sorted the rom out on my E100 with another update until the Orange one "arrives"....I tend to agree that its a decent phone. Which makes it all the more sad that the support is so flippin lousy.

If only it wouldnt crash so much and wasnt so damn slow......it would seriosly be one hell of agreat bit of kit.

On the whole though if you "were" to pull it to bits then its got to be said......the wmplayer sucks.........the gprs settup and reliability is naff......and the actual phone reliability and audio quality is awfull.

But saying that these points are few and livable.... Sometimes anyway....

that's funny, even now, I still find my spv better than my Nokia 3650 or my Sony Ericsson P800...

I had to use my old T68i for a few days while waiting for an SPV replacement and I found it such a privilege to be able to send SMS messages without having to spell out words like "cosmopolitan" or "copenhagen" letter by letter because the SPV wn't understand them...

I was also *ecstatic* to find out exactly how many characters I've got remaining in a message and found it extremely helpful that I could use my GPRS connection every time without having to redial two or three times or reboot the phone.

Oh, and guess what! I could also record a quick conversation on the phone about some road directions...

...and did I mention that the phone rang every time someone called?!

Not a single phantom call...

Oh, and finally, the phone didn't alert me to a new phantom SMS each time it started up and magically enough, the phone was operational within 10 seconds from pressing the ON button (including the time it took me to enter the PIN) as opposed to almost one minute (if it does start at all.... cause some times it loads up and then shuts down immediately)...

Oh, yes.... and it no longer took me 5-7 seconds to move between calendar days!

Yes, I couldn't use the MSN Messenger on my T68 but then again, neither can I on my SPV!

Yes, I couldn't watch video on my T68 but then again, neither can I on the media player because it keeps freezing every 8-10 seconds to rebuffer (a bug they INTRODUCED!!! in a BUG FIX!!!!

...and no, I couldn't play many fancy games on my T68.... But then again, that wouldn't be the reason for buying an E200 because my spaceships would have less manouverability than those in a 1980's ATARI!! (no diagonal movement!! ha!)

..... ah! The simple things in life...

Em... after a long winded conversation with 2 different supervisors at 156, I have been informaed by Orange that there is NO 1.6 ROM update release date available. The only update they are aware of is the MSN fix -they do not have any information on ROM updates, & both guys I spoke to said they didn't know if one would ever be released. They referred me to the Orange website (here) which at the bottom refers to the MSN fix being available mid-november - but makes no mention of ROM updates.

Now, given that we KNOW there IS a 1.6 update which is in testing - WHAT IS GOING ON???????????????????????

I think the guy's name that I spoke to was kermit ... or was it fozzy ...???

Ha! On that same site, I saw a snapshot of this game...

Too bad it won't work on the E200 (notice the 8 arrows... that's EIGHT, not FOUR!)

As for Orange's statement about the MSN fix, mid-November on the Orange calendar means start of February 2004...

Hmm, it seems to me that 1.6 has been bumped, and Orange and Microsoft have opted to convince everyone to switch to Windows Mobile. If th eupdate was ever going to be released, it would have been out now...

And as for the directional button on the E-200 - its far superior to that of the E-100. 8 way - 4 way...who cares  ?? Games like the above are pretty poor anyway so im not exactly annoyed. Kumite on the other hand is a different matter. That's possibly is the greatest game ever to grace a mobile phone, and Im sure button re-mapping is well underway.

"Welcome to Orange....Please listen carefully to the following options...........To talk to a complete prat who will try to make you feel better but will end up making you feel even more desperate about having an spv phone press 1.............To talk to another operator who only started work last week but has been told they will be sacked if they put anymore spv owners over to the I WANT TO LEAVE ORANGE DEPARTMENT press 2......To be put on hold and to have an automated computer voice with a speech impedement tell you how important your call is but who will end up disconnecting you press 3.......To speak directly to a man we found selling the big issue outside the underground station whom we offered £20 to talk complete rot to whoever rings....press 3..........and finally if you wish to hear the muppets theme tune complemented by one of our in house midi recording 11 year old Orange trainer specialists press 4..........do do dododo..........

We all seem to be getting agittated and anoyed, but there is an alternative the imate 1.5 rom works very well and you can download agile messenger which is free and still works with MSN. So I suggest that all of you who wish to use MSN Messenger search this forum for agile messenger.

Nice idea mate .....but....Algile never works properly on either of our SPV x or E100(s)....I just want the built in messenger to function thats all as it was originally the selling point that swayed me towards this phone in the first place. Besides which Agile is reeeeaaaallllyyyyy slow...

 ;) :( :)

It's not fair really - I speak to alot of 156 staff who are really good & try to be helpful but get scuppered by the company not giving them proper support. It is only the odd muppet here & there - e.g. I was told today that gprs was not a guarnteed connection, & that if there were 100 people in my node area using the service, then that would explain why I can't connect, & that Orange never said that I would be able to connect whenevr I wanted to coz they don't guarantee it ...

when I said it was described in the e100 manual as 'always on', he said 'yeah, that's right' ...

I said 'so, you are telling me that it is an always on connection, that you don't guarantee that I can connect to?'...

He said 'yeah, that's right' ...

I said 'do you see the irony in your statement ...

He said 'huh?' ...

I said 'are you seriously trying to tell me that Orange company policy on gprs is that the ability of the phone to connect to the gprs network is not guaranteed & is dependant on there being less than 100 users on my local network at any one time?' ...

He said (seriously) 'em, I'm not sure that is what I mean, em... I'll put you through to my supervisor now ...'

You know, you gotta laugh! If I didn't have these petty issues with a stoopid mobile phone, what would I do to pass time in work?? :)

What I am thinking now is a bit funny, is the fact that all the O staff today told me that it was the MSN messenger fix that was being help up. So how come the e200 has working Messenger?

Watch out for this one. You will loose Orange backup and update + your contacts. On the plus side you do get IA Styles 1.6 PhotoAlbum.

Ive had both and can safely say the E200 is by far the better phone. Speed, looks, camera, bluetooth - it's all there. The bugs that have been found aren't exactly soul destroying and its worth remembering that when we first bought our SPV's, they were full of bugs - the E-200 doesnt nearly have as many. Dont get me wrong, I was expecting a few. However theres nothing in there that cant be fixed

Yes thats obvious. But we all know that when it comes to this lot, theres going to be a hell of alot more. For instance, the speakerphone and the buzzing some guys have reported during calls. How in gods name that passed testing I'll never know?? Oranges first objective when designing a phone should be exactly this : design a phone that allows effective communication between two people. If you cant hear the other person on the other end of the call, then surely that defeats the purpose of having a mobile phone

[rant] Tbh Orange are in severe danger of losing my, and i'm sure a helluva lot of other people's, good faith over things like this. Some faults/bugs (call them what you will) have been known about for a heck of a long time, in that time only one update has been released which cured next to nothing...........how long have we been waiting for another since then???????

To add insult to injury, i decided to get an E200, hoping that this phone would be what the Canary/Tanager always should have been. Alas i appear to have made a mistake with that hope and the E200 and it's numerous glaring bugs are going back tomorrow.

Come January, the contract on my Original SPV is up for renewal, Orange are going to have to get their finger out if they expect to retain my (longstanding) custom. Smartphone is a BRILLIANT platform, unfortunately it seems to be that the only phone company to adopt it are a bunch of cack handed halfwits who don't want to make any effort [/rant]

THEY STILL ARE!!!

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING's CHANGED SINCE THE DAY YOU BOUGHT THE DAMN THING!!!

However theres nothing in there that cant be fixed

Ha! Oh yes there are plenty of things that Orange can't seem to fix...

And yes, all phones have bugs... It's just that they are far less obvious and important than the ones in the SPV.

I don't know ANY other mobile phone platform that has so many serious bugs!!

Dunno about you, but my SPV has NEVER had to go in for repair or anything like it. Its never had any major bug issues.

I don't know ANY other mobile phone platform that has so many serious bugs!!

What do you expect ? Its a fairly new OS 2002, and im sure we're going to see alot more. If you want a phone that oozes simplicity without the few minor bugs we have ? Then buy a Nokia.

Errr... Mantrac, have you actually used an Original SPV with 1.5?

Well I have and it's greatly improved on the bug ridden piece of kit I originally bought back in December last year. So it's not fair that Orange didn't make 1.5 available to all but it IS possible to get it and it IS a huge improvement, as I'm sure 1.6 will be when we get hold of it.

Anyway, I've now got my E200 to play with anyway so not particularly bothered anymore

After writing a bit of a pissed off email to Orange I got this reply today.

"Thank you for your mail.

I am sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your

Orange SPV phone.

I would like to advise that we are currently working with Microsoft

to ensure Orange customers enjoy the best-possible when accessing

MSN Messenger from their phones.

I am unable to confirm when the 1.6 update will be available.

I am sorry I am unable to be of assistance.

Kind regards

Orange Customer Services"

I am not sure what "customers enjoy the best-possible" is supposed to mean. Seems that they are still not able to tell us when it will be released. I remember something similar with 1.5. The Moderators tested it, we waited, and waited and then we were told that it wasn't going to be released. Something tells me that it is going to be the same with 1.6. Still there are plenty of numbers after 6.

So most of us can hear Orange hold music? No thanks.

Paul - we've got a petition going for flat rate GPRS - how about something similar to register members displeasure at the lack of information accompanying this much needed and long overdue update?

Quite honestly, its the only form of effective mass polling of opinion that I can think of that Orange might take note of?
