Wired News writes about Microsoft's relationship with the Smartphone Market and it's partners, in particular with reference to the new 'Voq Professional Phone':

Microsoft has been promising U.S. customers a Windows-powered smartphone, or cell phone with computing capabilities, for two years now. Finally, the company appears ready to make good on its word.

After an embarrassingly slow start launching its smartphone software, Microsoft partner Sierra Wireless said Thursday it would release a mobile phone with the Windows operating system in the first half of next year.

The phone, dubbed Voq, is slightly larger than most Web-enabled phones on the market. But it comes with a full-color screen, a fold-up QWERTY keyboard, an MP3 player, an Internet Explorer browser and support for multimedia messaging and e-mail. It has 48 MB of storage and a secure digital expansion slot for additional memory and features. Despite all this, the company claims the phone has six hours of talk time and about 100 hours on standby.

Sierra hasn't released pricing information or a list of wireless operators that will sell the phone. But the company said it is targeting business users in the United States, Canada and Western Europe.
