Guest Pagemakers Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 Looks like Opera are copying Microsoft (the home screen looks almost identical). They are introducing the "Opera Platform" for operators and handset manufacturers (Nokia etc) but not Microsoft. Looks nifty though: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2003/10/10/opera.jpg
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 OMG! That's a bit TOO similar if you ask me... P
Guest midnight Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 it isnt an OS, its just a front end, so thats all there is to it really, and yes, i think MS could have a case for direct copying of their homescreen :)
Guest maxh2003 Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 From the above URL (emphasis added by me): The Opera Platform's Home Screen technology can contain teasers such as news headlines, new ring tones, competitions, operator offers, etc. Information from local applications such as Messaging and Calendar can also be easily integrated on the Home Screen. The teasers are conveniently displayed on the main screen, visible on the handset at all times when not in active use. This sounds like Home Screen Spam to me! At least Orange can't hijack *our* homescreens...
Guest DMF Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 To have a case you have to be able to prove your self or your company lost out fiscally because of the infringement. It DOES look close though doesnt it - then again, how much leeway for design is there with clear and neet placement of text fields facilitating its use ?
Guest midnight Posted October 15, 2003 Report Posted October 15, 2003 looking more into this, its just an app, a browser to be exact, that you then create your own homescreen inside of (kind of like a normal browser homescreen) and it uses javascript to get stuff the dynamic stuff. the scarey part is, how much control do they give to the user, cos in theory, if you can get the sms message (as shown in the homescreen) and you have the ability to talk to a server, theyu it may be possible to make a nasty homescreen that send all you sms messages to a website, but i think they would have thought of that :)
