Guest Brody Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 MSN Messenger software update In an effort to ensure the latest security and privacy protections, Microsoft recently updated its .NET Messenger Service, requiring Orange customers who wish to access MSN Messenger through their SPV or SPV E100 to install new software on their phones. Without installing a new software patch, the MSN Messenger programme in the SPV and SPV E100 will not work. We, together with Microsoft, are very sorry for the resulting service disruption. Orange have taken all steps to minimise any impact to customers and are committed to delivering innovative communications capabilities. We plan to distribute the software fix for this in mid-November 2003. Please note that this update to the .NET Messenger Service will not affect Orange customers with an SPV E200 or Motorola MPX200. Hmm, i'd love an E200! :| Mid-November it is then... Source: Orange UK
Guest Jimi_A Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 edit Thanks for the info. I'll try Orannge tomorrow Jimi /edit Hi All, perhaps I'm being stupid, but where do I install new software on their phones. Without installing a new software patch, the MSN Messenger programme in the SPV and SPV E100 will not work. Can't find a link at MS mobile or Orange. The only thing I can see that might do the trick is the .NET SDK, but I think that might be overkill. Or does this mean I have to use the AGILE client? If fact does this AGILE client work with the new MSN privacy policy? Thanks in advance, Jimi
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 If you haven't already done it call Orange Fax & Data (156,3,1) and ask for a GPRS refund for the period 15/10/03 to 15/11/03 They seem to give it without any problems, as long as you state that you bought your SPV primarily for Messenger
Guest Richie M Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Jimi you need to keep reading, the update for Smartphone 2002 is not available yet
Guest mattscholey Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Why will they give a GPRS refund? It's not costing us any GPRS not having Messenger, its just an inconvenience. Does this mean as an apology they'll refund any GPRS I use next month, or something else. Thanks, Matt
Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 IMO...It should have been ready by the time the new Messenger rolled out. An apology is nice but doesn't fix their failure (MS and Orange). One month isn't that long and no Messenger isn't the end of the world. But the cut-off should have been pushed back until all systems were ready.

No. If you have purchased a GPRS package at a fixed monthly cost, you will still be charged that fixed monthly cost whether or not you use GPRS. I am assuming that the refund is for the GPRS package for which you would be charged if you didn't use GPRS at all.
Guest mattscholey Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 Can't you cancel your GPRS bundle whenever you want though? If I upgrade my GPRS bundle on 150 to say 7MB@£15/month, then call 156 and complain about the cut-off, will they refund this £15, and thus give me 7MB free easily. Matt

Matt For at least part of the 15/10-15/11 period it's too late to cancel as Orange require you to notify them before your billing date for the said period.

But the cut-off should have been pushed back until all systems were ready. Couldn't agree more. If MS could wait until 15th October why couldn't they wait until a Smartphone version was available? It just goes to show how little respect MS views the Smartphone user base at the moment. I know there's not many of use at the mo, but they're not going to make any changes to that if they continue this way...
Guest deepak Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 i got hold of mda2 in dubai....launched.....launched....launched...bluetooth headset working....dream come true
Guest Voldemort Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 well, i have a mitac and i'm using vodafone in italy who do i have to call? vodafone, which don't support my phone, or mitac, which is not a mobile operator?
Guest Brody Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Mitac may release an update for Messenger. Ps. Cool name Voldermort and even cooler avatar!
Guest marknicholls Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Hi I have purchased a Mitac Mio 8380 (Smartphone 2002) and am using it on o2. I also have the MSN messenger problems. Will i be able to get an update for it somehow if im not an orange customer? Thanks
Guest Voldemort Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 many tnx brody 8) unfortunately now i just have to wait mitac or try agile messenger
Guest Brody Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Quickly off-topic, my new avatar is inspired by yours Voldermort! :)
Guest Voldemort Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 great! feel free to "steal" mine too
Guest marknicholls Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 I have bought a Mitac Mio 8380 offline to use on o2. I am of course not able to use MSN messenger, But will i be able to get an update for it when it released? Will MS release it is a downloadable file, or am i screwed unless i am an orange customer? Thanks
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 Why not use the fanastic Agile Messenger? (see news page) P
Guest Voldemort Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 actually i'm using it... it's great 8) but microsoft should have provided a solution before the 15th...
Guest Brody Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 Agreed, Agile is a great solution and something that i'll probably use instead of the built in MSN Messenger when the update gets released but its lucky that it was released or people would have become very agitated. Imagine buying the phone only to find out that you can't get on Messenger!
Guest Voldemort Posted October 21, 2003 Report Posted October 21, 2003 yes it's a very strange situation... and i really don't understand why microsoft still hasn't find a solution about bundled programs that i don't like, in my mitac i have to use jMMS for the mms and the usual pocket outlook for sms and email; as you should know, spv has everything in pocket outlook. is it possible to remove jMMS it's just not needed when i can use 1 program instead of 2... (i know this is a bit out of topic, but if someone could help i would appreciate  )
