Guest elvie Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 Hi there, In Italy and my GPRS isn't working and somebody has sent me a photo message. I've got my laptop, ADSL connection and phone is in its cradle, can I use the computers internet connection to get the message on my phone? Have tried putting my 'Data connections' settings on every possible option and still no luck... Thanks in advance....
Guest crafty Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 The following advice is from the excellent coolsmartphone.com: Setting up a piggy-pack connection: All of the changes below take place in the Settings > Data Connections control panel. 1) Change the "Internet Connection" spinner to Automatic 2) Menu > Edit Connections 3) Open the Dial-Up Connections (choose edit on the Edit Connections screen) 4) Edit "Orange CSD WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done twice to get back to the list of connection types. 5) Open the GPRS Connections 6) Edit "Orange WAP" and change it so it connects to "WAP Network". Press done to save the change, then the home key to leave the control panel. You may need to also do this.... 1) On your PC - open ActiveSync. 2) Click Options 3) Click "Rules" and ensure that the Pass-Thru is set to use the Internet Doing this will allow you to connect your phone to connect over your computers internet connection rather than using GPRS. Hope this helps! 8)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 You do not need to do all that :? If you do not have GPRS then all you have to do is the following, To use the PC's internet connection on the phone all you have to do is go to SettingsData Connections then change Internet connection to Pass through connction. Then you will be able to access the internet on the phone.
Guest crafty Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 Didn't mean to confuse the issue - this is just how i set mine up after reading the article. I think the advantage of this method is that you don't have to go into settings to switch between using GPRS and pass-thru: if the phone is in it's cradle it uses pass through, if not, it uses GPRS.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 Agree but there is no need to change the WAP connections :) for internet access. Only reason I posted a shortened version is that elvie is not using GPRS at the moment.
Guest elvie Posted October 18, 2003 Report Posted October 18, 2003 Hi there, I've changed the 'internet connection' to pass-through. But still no luck. When I try and download the MMS, the 'G' shows above the signal bar, the screen displays 'Downloading Message', then after a while changes to 'Transfer Failed'. I've also tried to view a webpage in internet explorer, the status bar changes from 'Finding site...' to 'Connecting....' [No 'G' this time] and then after a while a alert message comes up saying page cannot be found! Haven't tried the 'long' tip that was posted, might have to try that in the morning...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Sounds like you cannt recieve the MMS by using Passthrough then :) Another thing to check in Activsync make sure you have Allow USB checked in FileConnection Settings
Guest ranzz Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 I don't really think it's possible recieving an MMS through the computer's connections cause most of the times the carrier makes the MMS server only recieve and send data to IP address within the carrier's range, meaning you can't even ping the MMS server's ip from you regular PC internet connection. Though I am getting the same problem with MMS when it contains anything other than text... discussing it with a friend from my carrier's internet and data support center he said that they are aware of the problem and it has been reported with Nokia 6610.. their MMS server pretty much sucks, check if you have the same deal here - just send yourself (or ask someone) to send you a text-only MMS message and see if you get the text instead of getting "transfer failed".
Guest elvie Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Hi all, Can understand why I can't get the MMS to download, but can't understand why the internet explorer isn't using the computers internet connection. Have tried the 'long' tip above and still get the alert: The page you are looking cannot be found.
Guest ranzz Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Tried different pages? Set the connections setting under Internet Explorer options?
Guest elvie Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Still no luck, Got Settings>Data Connections>Internet Connecton Set to Pass through. Internet explorer>Menu>Options>Connections> Automatically Detect Setting 'Clicked' and Select Network 'The Internet'
Guest ranzz Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 I have no idea... could your computer's firewall be blocking it or something? I'm out of ideas..
Guest elvie Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 ola, you were right, Sygate Personal Firewall was blocking the SPV, turned it off and I could browse using IE no worries. Thanks!!
Guest ranzz Posted October 19, 2003 Report Posted October 19, 2003 Wow, that's one lucky guess! happy to help
Guest karl184 Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 how can you make that option work without turning off sygate? anyone?
Guest elvie Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 I turned it off, realised that I had been blocking the smartphone. So I cancled all the blocked programmes, plugged in the smartphone, trued using the iternet, and it seemed that it was the 'connection manager' that allows pass through. Check that you have 'connection manager' allowed and try that...
