Lack of sound when converting from Avi to Mpeg???

I've just converted a movie from .AVI to Mpeg with TMPGE but when I play the output there is no sound in the movie neither when playing it on pc nor on the SPV...

I'm about to go insane, as I've tried to solve this problem for several days now... I've got the latest codecs, so I don't think that's the problem...

I hope some of you know how to solve this problem!!!

Are you choosing the same file as the Video Source and as the Audio Source?

Two points, probably both tried but you never know...

1) Ensure the original file has an audio strem TMPEG can handle

2) Ensure that you have made sure that the audio stream is being encoded. Its quite easy to turn the sound option off (I've done it many times in VirtualDub!!!!)

Yep I'm using the same audio and video source...

Hmmmm, I don't think I've turned off the sound; but just in case where in TMPGEnc. do you turn the sound on and off??

Could it be that I need some new plug-ins?? Don't know if I have the latest ones...

I'm not a big fan of TMPEG so I can't help you there sorry. I also don't use PocketTV so I'm uncertain o what codecs it uses. However, assuming you use the standard TMPEG codec settings, you should have no problems, as MPEG1 is a standard which hasn't changed for ages. No newer codecs required.

I tend to use VirtualDub and make DivX AVI's for my phone, then use PocketMVP to play them. It might be a little more hassle but I seem to get better quality over all and I can use DivX on a few other devices...

I've had this problem and come up with a kind of a solution. It turns out there is a format of AVI that TMPGEnc can't read fully. Here is the FAQ. I hope I'm not doing anything wrong by posting this. Here's a link to the site for more FAQs - http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_faq.html

TMPGEnc can not read AVI file with DV format.

The file is probably Type-1 DV format. The format is not supported by TMPGEnc. Type-1format has different structure from AVI format. TMPGEnc can not read the format since TMPGEnc does not support DirectShow.

To solve this matter, try to save the captured or edited file as Type-2 DV format, however, there are still chance not to be able to read the file if you are using general IEEE1394 board without codec for VFW.

The solution I have had to use is to convert the AVI file to WMV using Windows Media Encoder (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/wm7/encoder.aspx) and then use TMPGEnc to convert the WMV file to MPG. This works and produces a reasonable movie file to watch on my E100, but if this is the most efficient path I don't know.

I'm unsure but I also believe VirtualDub supports this type(?) If it does, then you could just pass it through VirtualDub and encode straight to MPEG1 (or DivX, or huffyuv, etc.), but you would then need a standard Windows MPEG codec...

Im not sure this is the correct place for this type of question but the answer is :

There are 2 ways to do it

1) the easy way is use dvd2svcd to convert it to mpeg then resize it with tmpeg

2) the not so easy way is to exstract the audio from the dix avi file using virtualdub and encode using the resulting file as an external source with tmpeg.

My Guide.

Well, thats the guide for making your movies watchable on the SPV. All you then need to do is download the different bits, such as PocketMVP for the phone, DivX and VirtualDub for the SPV. If you need any of the bits (Like an older, compatible version of DivX) then I can E-Mail you them, but some are quite large (3MB+) so make sure your E-Mail will allow them.

The guide is currently being cleaned up for the SPV, and will be put in the FAQ, soon, where I will also do a general style Q&A thread regarding basics on media coding (or try to :)).

Any suggestions for Q's, PM me (Thats open to anyone BTW ).

PocketTV only plays MPEG files.

To convert files in MPEG format, you can use our Guide and Templates, located at http://forum.pocketmovies.net/viewtopic.ph...php?p=3415#3415 .

WMP only plays video files that are using the WMV format, it does not play MPEG.

The Windows Media Encoder creates files in WMV format that can only be played by WMP.
