Guest coulhaus Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 An Economist article proclaiming the death of the PDA due to Smart phone sales.
Guest comebackdx Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Thanks for the link to the article. From my experience, the PDA's being used by people have acted as reference tools (e.g. Contacts, Calendar, To Do's, reading documents, etc.) Due to the input medium for PDA's, the volume of data entry would be sparse and limited to basic notes, and updating existing data (e.g. moving diary appointments, contact numbers etc.) The smartphone does the majority of the above functions, and provides you with a phone, all in one convenient form factor. I don't think that this is the end of the PDA. However a significant proportion of the conventional PDA market will migrate to Smartphone devices, because it does all that they ever used a PDA for along with a mobile phone. In a manner of speaking the Smartphone will "Kill two birds with one stone."
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I think that a large amount of the most basic users will migrate, but the power users will continue to use their PDAs. I used my Pocket PC just for Calendar, Contacts etc. so I got rid of mine, but I have friends that use theirs for navigation and other heavyweight applications that are unlikely to appear any time soon, so they will keep theirs. Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 If the phone had Excel I would not need the Axim.
Guest beersoft Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I still use my pda for some things (ebooks, games, typing more than a text message worth of text, printing stuff via IR, sending/receiving contacts to/from other phones, TV remote control etc...) if i could use my phone for 8 hours in a row without recharging or having to hard reset and reinstall everything everytime the moons are out of sync i would get rid of my PDA :) the death of the PDA will come, its just not today. Guest Maverick Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Its only a matter of time before we have more apps running on the Smartphone. Now, many of the developers are in a 'wait and watch' mode.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 Yeah, here's hoping! P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 I agree with paul. There is a HUGE percentage of PDA users who only use it for Calendar & Contacts. Not much else. They are the people who would be the first to switch to smartphones. The power users will retain their PDAs....for awhile at least.
Guest fraser Posted October 20, 2003 Report Posted October 20, 2003 This story was on Slashdot earlier. This comment probably sums up these type of stories: The article is really predicting the death of PDAs that aren't integrated with phones. This is quite different that the death of ALL PDAs. All the article is saying is that PDAs will include another feature. PDAs are evolving. Very few things stay the way their were originally intended. Did computers die when we switched from punch cards to keyboards? Not quite. They're still computers, they just aren't exactly what they used to be.
