Guest jamesluo Posted October 23, 2003 Report Posted October 23, 2003 Did anyone try to install smartphone 2003 in spv smartphone 2002?
Guest Brody Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 I believe the answer is no. There is doubt over whether the hardware in the SPV/E100 is sufficient to run Windows Mobile 2003.
Guest th0mz Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 @Brody: The hardware in the SPV/E100 and the E200 are 100% equal (except the added camera ofcuz), am I right? Then there should be no doubt as if the HW is capable of running the 2003 edition of the OS. It's more of a will-O-allow-it question IMO.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 No, the E200 has more memory. P
Guest Brody Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 RAM is the key, hence the lack of worry about the CPU not being upgraded, the RAM increases performance greatly (I hear!).
Guest mattscholey Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 will orange be providing a way of updating the current 2002 system to 2003 via an update? or will the current spv and e100 users be restricted to 2002?A business decision has not been made on this yet. If it wasn't possible, then there would be no business decision for them to make, so we can be pretty sure that it IS possible. Matt
Guest nytehawk2002 Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 Honestly I think it is a business decision. A) Will they sell enough upgrades to warrant the headaches that support will have? :) Think of all the people who will try and upgrade their phones, fail and then call support for help and then expect some kind of warranty support because they messed it up. C) Will the performance of the product suffer due to higher h/w requirements? Will this then cause an increase in Item B? D) Why not make more money by selling a phone that has SP2K3 and rather than a few paltry bucks make a nice profit and have warranties out there so you can always drop back and punt if you can't figure out a problem with a phone replace it...

Guest mwille Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 Did all if you guys miss this? http://msmobiles.com/news.php/1526.html Specific instructions on installing sp2003... Yeah, on the RED-E develloper phone, it is a specific version for that...
Guest orangewinger Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 It is possible to run WM 2003 for Smartphone on an SPV as we have one in the office, the question is of course whether Orange will release it and I'd very much doubt it as you'll hardly have any space left in memory! I guess you also need to look at the average lifespan of mobile phones these days, which is generally less than the length of the contract! Dave
Guest Crispy Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 I guess you also need to look at the average lifespan of mobile phones these days, which is generally less than the length of the contract! Anoying, but true...
Guest ranzz Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 You mean to tell me that you SPV will stop functioning in less than a year?
Guest orangewinger Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 what I meant was that the SPV was (almost) outdated a year after it was released. Nokia seem to have replacement models almost every 6 months! Dave
Guest drblow Posted October 25, 2003 Report Posted October 25, 2003 It is pretty clear from the evidence I reckon that the phone IS capable of running 2003, & I think they will eventually offer 2003 licenses for sale to existing SPV users. It would be stupid for them to ignore the fact that there will always be people who won't upgrade their phones - plus the fact that alot of people will be at the end of a contract period & free to choose another network if they can't find a good deal! Orange don't appear to be worried about the amount they currently spend on CS dealing with SPV problems :? so I couldn't see them being that concerned with extra problems from a new OS. The support required for OS2003 will be in place for all the users who are queuing up for an E200 as we speak - well, by support, obviously I mean a bunch of spanked up madmen with as much technical knowledge as you can find in ... say, a user manual!! I reckon the Orange CS budget is something like 27.35 a month! :)
Guest orangewinger Posted October 26, 2003 Report Posted October 26, 2003 I would be suprised if Orange do bring out an update, far easier for them just to get people to upgrade the phone as the new phones are more stable etc!
Guest mattscholey Posted October 26, 2003 Report Posted October 26, 2003 At the end of the day, Orange are a company who are only out there to make profit. There decision will be based on weather or not they expect all SPV users to get an E200 when their contract runs out, and if releasing an update will put these people off buying a new phone. They'll know that everyone will pay to upgrade, and will think about how much they can make from selling the update. They'll also want to think about if they'll be able to sell SPV's to new users, who will buy with the confidence that in a years time they'll be able to upgrade their 2003 to 2004, and that they're buying a future-proof phone. So all it is for Orange is balancing out what they'll make from it against what they'll loose. Matt PS. Does Mr Orange have anything to say about this topic.
