Hi,

In the end of Oktober there is an big pc convention in Holland.

There are a lot of shops and new products for sale for the convention price.

And as you guess I bought mine there.

Maybe you can visit a local convention there and see what is for sale there.

Greetzzzz

Ohh God this has got me thinking... :-k

OK, first desktop was a 286 12MHz, CGA, then VGA, screen, 256K RAM and perhaps a 40MB HDD (This was several years ago!). I remember the days of play Commander Keen and Boxxle...

Then DooM came out, I went nuts after playing it on my Dads laptop and soon enough the desktop became a beast worthy to play Doom, a 386SX 25MHz, 8MB RAM, VGA screen and 400MB HDD. Admittedly I had to play in low detail, but it worked! And thats where I started getting somewhat knowledgeable about PC's (My Dad has regretted it since). We also got our first CD ROM drive, caddy based single speed, then a trayed triple speed.

Next was a 486DX4-120 (AMD), with 8 speed CD, 1GB HDD and 32MB RAM. Now DooM was REALLY playable, and we ventured into Windows 95 (I still lived in DOS).

The came the second family PC (From here on, at least 2 PC's were in the house). This was a Pentium 120, 32MB RAM and Windows 95. It also had a modem, so we began to discover the joys of the internet (Still early days yet, Google certainly didn't exist, Yahoo was search engine of choice).

Then there was the Pentium 233 MMX with 64MB RAM and the first AGP video card and a PCI based 3D accelerator card (3Dfx Voodoo1). That was niiccceee. I'd also began to accept DOS was dead and edged my way into Windows 95/98

Then I turned 18, and bought myself a PII-350MHz with 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD and a 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000. Also had a CD burner, the whole 2x speed of it! I also did my first overclocking, getting a 24% increase in speed from the FSB, creating a stable 434MHz.

At Uni, upgraded a bit slower (no money), but still did it. Basically, after working as IT Support for an entire summer, I upgraded to an AMD Athlon 900MHz, 20GB and 30GB HDDs, 256MB RAM, GeForce2 GTS Pro 64MB graphics card. This also had three CD drives, a fast CD reader, 12x CD Burner and a DVD ROM drive. Through its 3 year existance it got a 40GB and then an 80GB HDD (Making 150GB, 30+40+80), 512MB RAM and a 24x CD Burner.

And that lasted until pretty recently, when I shrunk down from my full tower case and replaced it all, speakers, keyboard, power leads, monitor, EVERYTHING.

I now have a P4C 3GHz, Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, 2 SATA 160GB HDDs in RAID0, PATA 80GB Backup HDD, Sound Blaster Audigy 2, TV Card, 1GB RAM, DVD ROM drive, 4x DVD Burner (Pioneer 106, DVD±RW). Also have an MS natural keyboard, Logitech MX700 wireless mouse, Logitech Z640 5.1 speaker set and a 17" TFT screen (16ms response).

It keeps me happy for now... 8)

(Sorry for the ridiculously long post guys )

Best bet is to buy from these Computer Markets. They tend to be (a lot) cheaper than PC shops and the models are usually built to your specs (Or you can modify them). Its what I've done since the 486DX4.

We recently got my Mum a P4 2.4GHz for a little over £200 for everything (Including monitor). Not bad at all. We just had to install Windows, get some speakers and now she's trying to figure out the wonders of E-Mail.

Only problem was that was in the Midlands (Where my parents live). Down here in the South, things tend to be a little more expensive... :)

Yeah London is quite expensive... i'll def consider the computer fair though... Ive just moved into my first flat this weekend so money is short... £200 for a P4 2.4GHz sounds good... might try for that!

siu99spj, good insight to what others have done to get by over the years...

Hi siu99spj,

A little long but...... gives a very good view ha ha ha.

 Well, it did seem as though a history was the best explanation. As to the question, its not that bad at all, though Windows takes AN AGE (5 mins+) to boot up, gonna fix that when SP2 finally gets out.

But IMPRESSIVE :)

 Aw shucks!

We all have ideas. I just decided to hell with some of the savings I'd made from my first 9 months at work (Not that much with a student loan AND living in London...).

Also going to a big fair in Germany this weekend (Separate reason for going to Germany, just happens to be on in Stuttgart) so might end up wasting my money on something else...

Overclockers are OK, but tend to be more in the boutique and therefore expensive market.

If you're looking for stock components, you can't go wrong with Dabs or eBuyer.

Oh, and from my trip to Germany, I now have an A4 graphics tablet (For a mere €29), a boatload of glossy paper (200 sheets A4 and 100 sheets 10x15cm for €24), a 4 port USB hub (€7) and a video switching box (€9,50. Not strictly for my PC but my video, DVD player and PC all connect to it).

So, fairly reasonable bargains...

I have to say - for buying components online is the way to go - and ebuyer is one of the best (they also do some complete systems).

Got a laptop which is a 386, 8Mb ram and 80mb hard drive - managed to get it onto the internet with an external 33k serial modem!!!! MoDaCo in all its black and white glory!!!

Oh well, if we're going to non IBM-PS2 compatible PC's (Does anyone really call them that anymore?) the I guess the first I remember was a Commodore 64. Those were the days, along with its instant load cartridge, tape deck and a floppy disk drive (You would not believe how huge it was)!

Talking of C64's, in Stuttgart (Modelbahn Süd) they had a C64 stand. It had C64's with CD-ROM drives modded onto them. A bit slow maybe, but it worked!

However, from C64, I went to an Amiga 500+ with 1MB RAM and 2 floppy drives. I also had a Megadrive at some pont, though I pretty much ditched them with my 386 PC, XTreeGold and FDO.

Thankfully though the postal strikes didn't affect the arrival of my Game Boy Advance catridge reader/writer, the G-Bank (But my trip to Germany did)! Can finally start programming for it again...

Even better is that it will accept my SD card, so I can switch memory between my phone and GBA.

Getting nostalgic are we? :)

My first comp was a Commodore 64 and loved it more than I loved my first car. Got an Amiga 500 couple of years later (1988??) along with a IBM PC 10-III which ran at 2Mhz. Did NOT have a hard disk , just ran floppys and the old DOS 3.2.

Moving on to PCs,

286 -> 386 -> Cyrix 686 -> AMD 350Mhz -> P3 900 -> AMD XP 1600 -> upgrade overdue !!

Cas

P.S. My desktop isnt bad enuf to compete here.

Still got my original speccy and c64 with disk drive and action replay ( I was so cool :( )

and they are still in their boxes, bargain hunters ahoy :)

after that it was all downhill 286 > 386 > the usual pentiums

Still not got the same feeling as eventually loading a commie game after 10 minutes and then realising you don't really want to play it anymore :D
