Guest mjread Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 Hi all, Absolute newbie here, only discovered Smartphones existed a couple of days ago (I kid you not!! My cave is a riot right now!) and am currently considering the SPV E200 when it lands. At the moment I have an O2 XDA which is great(ish), with the exception of feeling like I've been transported back to the 80s when using it as a phone and less said about the reliability of the radio stack the better. Being as I really only use it for email, web browsing and msn I am seriously considering something which looks a bit more like a phone and doesn't prompt "he's talking into his laptop" comments. So, based on what I primarily use it for, should I go for a SPV or should I stick with my XDA? I do have some questions which I'm hoping somebody will be able to answer, either directly about the E200 or based on the E100. Apologies if these questions sound dumb, but unfortunately Orange are giving me their "customer wants something that's not yet available, therefore they won't be buying anything today, therefore I can't be bothered to even give the time of day" attitude so am unable to experience a handset for myself yet. Apparently the E200 is going to be so different that it's not worth me looking at the E100. Hmm. Anyway... How is the web browsing experience? Is the size of the screen acceptable? Is anybody in a position to do a XDA/SPV comparison? How is the usability of the MSN client? Is it possible to hold multiple conversations? Does the MSN client run in the background? Would I get notification of people wanting to chat to me while I was say browsing the web? Could I switch between browser and MSN client easily leaving things as I left off? Is there anything else I should consider before making a decision? Being as I'm a potential Smartphone newbie and don't as yet have any manufacturer preferences or expectations, is there any other handsets that I may get more excited about? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Guest paulmottley Posted October 28, 2003 Report Posted October 28, 2003 Should you get an SPV ? Answer =YES I'm sure you will get more reasons in other replies!!!(I'm not a techie)

Guest deepak Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 guys...an honest opinion.... I was a t68i user...moved to o2 xda...then for bluetooth moved again to p800....then for portability moved to t610(though here i missed showing off all those videos and downloading mails but what to do the convinience of using a bluetooth is just amazing...then suddenly moved to qtec because of this forum...then somehow managed and got the mitac mio smartphone with camera ...now here i felt as if i had everything and wrote atleast 20 times in this forum..bought a lot of softwares...but somehow without bluetooth support was unhappy...then the hanging of the smartphone everytime ...then people started saying i hang like my phones too...fact..half the time i was stopping my car to reset and then call.... then changed my whole world again...for last 10 days nothing has gone wrong...i sold all my phones and ipaqs for a big sum to buy my self all sort of new devices.. because from dubai has come my new device IMATE...XDA2 or whatever...everything perfect...life,videos ,mails, bluetooth, incoming photos and all that u can do with a pda...i love my life again and now i am on a 400mhz processor..so i dont hang...i feel smartphone needs to grow a lot and xda 2 is already here....should we compromise? _________________ and for sure this one doesnt feel like i am talking into the laptop and people are now just dazed...and so am i...this is the wonder product made by htc,,,,,,new spv2 is back on 133...with a bluetooth support it will hang for sure
Guest cyrilthefish Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 Being someone who was within 2 days of buying an XDA before discovering the the Smartphone platform i can probably help a lot :) I'll try to do my best of a comparrison: Disadvantages: first off, the XDA does have a higher spec CPU and RAM (206mhz/32mb compared to 133mhz/16mb) Higher res screen Touchscreen more fully featured version of pocketPC 2002 ( ie. smartphone doesn't properly support the SDIO slot for example) faster version of pocket IE (the smartphone pocketIE is easily bogged down by large pages) Advantages: Much smaller size, Essentially a PDA in a mobile phone casing Much better battery life (i've read an XDA can manage 15 hours, a SPV can manage 2 days if you go easy on high-cpu usage apps) Now the SPV has been around a while, allmost all of the essential PDA apps have been ported to smartphone As for MSN, i'd guess it's a bit more fiddly than an XDA, but easily able able to hold multiple conversations (menu -> chats -> select ongoing converstation) T9 can be used as well, which helps a lot. It's also quite happy running in the background, with and audible alert and a MSN icon in the top bar appearing if someone sends you a message (plus you can set it to vibrate too if you edit the registry) For pocketIE it has to be said, it's slow for full-size pages, but gets there eventually. For smaller, or smartphone-optimised pages, it's plenty fast enough. I'm hoping the 32mb RAM and 2003 OS of the e200 will fix this.
Guest deepak Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 what msn......? brother there is no msn for more then 15 days now...and all smartphone users are waiting for the undated update....now whats left in the smartphone....?
Guest SeaneyC Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 what msn......? brother there is no msn for more then 15 days now...and all smartphone users are waiting for the undated update....now whats left in the smartphone....? Agile messenger has been working for almost a week now flawlessly. I easily prefer it to the M$ client, and it does AIM, ICQ and Yahoo!

True, but as been said, Agile messenger is free and works so it isn't a problem. I really think Orange, while failing to roll out the MSN patch in time, should have paid agile Agile a bit and released Agile messenger on orange update... It is a feature that a lot of us use after all  In the grand scheme of things though, MSN being unavailble is a relativeley minor bug (when a freeware alternative is available!) Lets just hope MS don't do it again :)
Guest Myke Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I had a Nokia 8390, i didnt like it so i got the Sony Ericsson t68i, it was an average phone it had ZERO memory and no fun features (besides bluetooth) I also had a Toshiba e740 pocket PC which i eventually stopped carrying around because it was too big for my pockets. I was hesitant to import a smartphone, but i did and I couldnt be more pleased with it. I sold the PDA and old cell phone and combined them into one fun filled device. I love it.
Guest Mike Wagstaff Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 The XDA used to be my primary phone before I switched over to the SPV (and then the E-100). To my mind, there is little doubt that the overwhelming advantages of the smartphone platform are as follows: * Far more portable * Far more robust * Can be used one-handed - it was not a fun task trying to use a stylus during rush-hour on the tube! :) The disadvantages of the smartphone platform are: * Far less software * The SPV/E-100's battery life is not as good as the XDA * Smaller screen resolution = not as good for web browsing Also, I find that T9 is slower for me than using Character Recogniser, something that is especially annoying when it comes to entering punctuation. Whereas I found myself quite happily writing emails on the XDA, this isn't something I do anywhere near as regularly on my E-100. The advantage of being able to use the E-100 one-handed, however, does make a surprising difference to me. If you're one of the lucky people who finds themselves on trains/buses/tubes on a regular basis, this could be quite an important consideration. As far as reception, call quality and general phone-related issues go, I would rate the XDA and SPV/E-100 as being about equal... i.e. not great, but survivable given all the other advantages! :(
