Mr Orange - Is the E200 software locked?

Mr Orange

The MS Mobiles website states:

" Unfortunately Orange operator is not present in many countries (including one of the biggest ones like USA or Germany) and it also has nasty practice of software-locking of "orange" branded smartphones (it is unclear whether the unlocking for E200 will be even available at all)."

Please can you confirm if this is the case - will the e200 be software locked the same way as the e100?

If it is, I (and I imagine hundreds of others) will be buying the QTek, available from Expansys.

I think Orange won't be leaving it completely unlocked, but I think the key question is "Since the e200 is Smartphone 2003, will it's application lock be set in the mode where a user is prompted about running unsigned software?"

This is what it should be, the phone prompts the first time you run a new app (if it's unsigned/from an untrusted source) and the popup says something like "This application is unsigned and may impact the performance of your phone, do you want to continue? Yes/No"

Very good solution all round.

That's OK, but a complete lock like on the e100 with NO unlocking solution (see above) is unacceptable.

Mr Orange: Locked, locked with option or unlocked?

I would have to agree, unacceptable.. Same kinda goes for simlock in my case. Orange's network sucks ass in the Netherlands (sorry Mr. Orange) so there is no way in hell I'm switching to it in order to be able to use the E200.. Qtek it is then

Where is Mr Orange nowadays ? Locked up in some cage testing the E-200 probably lol - I'd trade places to get a firsthand look at that phone :)

It is my current understanding that this will indeed be the case, unsigned unprivileged apps will use a warning, only privileged apps ( those that require Radio access etc) will still need to be signed with the Orange root cert.

Weeeee!!! Now thats good news! :) ... But, will you be prompted every time you run program or only the first time?

I believe it only prompts when you install the program

Other phones like P800/900 just prompt you at the installation stage

It's specified to prompt on install based on the cabs signing and on first run of the app. After first run it remembers that you allowed that app and then runs fine.

Similar to the way Internet Explorer behaves with activeX on your PC.

(The above is just rumor and innuendo... no hard facts)

As it should've been since day one

There's a lot of people out there not useing their SPV to anywhere near it's full potential due to app locking.

A user review on MS Mobiles states "the is software locked and SIM locked ".

Hmmmmmm. Mr O, I hope you are right.

My sources indicate the most recent e200 code builds are still locked... but heck, Mr O should know :)

I think this is quite a fundamental issue. Can we install non-signed apps or not? Can we have a definite YES or NO.

So Mr O, can you install unsigned apps, a definite.....Yes or No?

I believe that Orange would be stupid not to allow unsigned apps to run on these phones. The developers make it what it is today and without them, I believe the SPV would be a pretty dull phone.
