Guest Simon Desser Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 Well things are really hotting up now :) The O2 XPhone (aka Voyager, aka E200, aka Qtek 8080) is on it's way 8) Details can now be found on myxda.com Thanks to Arne at ppcw.net for spotting this news :( According to O2 Asia's redesigned website, O2 is introducing the xda II into the Asian Pacific market in November. O2 Asia already sold the xda before in different countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and others. Maybe that's not real big news - real big news for sure is, that O2 Asia seems to be ready now to introduce their first Microsoft Smartphone (after they've canceled the previous announced version in summer this year). According to the information I got and the published picture on the site, O2 Asia will release the HTC Voyager as O2 Xphone! The O2 Xphone will be the same phone which is soon to be released from Orange as SPV E200 and features Microsoft Smartphone 2003, Bluetooth and a build-in camera on the backside of the phone. The xda II will be available in following countries for US$ 860 (not inclusive of local tax and duty): Australia: end of Nov 2003 Malaysia: 3rd week of Nov 2003 Macau: TBA Vietnam: TBA Thailand: 3rd week of Nov 2003 Hong Kong: end of Oct 2003 Singapore: end of Oct 2003 Philippines: end of Nov 2003 Indonesia: 3rd week of Nov 2003Xphone.jpg

Guest midnight Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 who cares, good to see O2 join the party :)
Guest goinnuts Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 sounds like a mutant. meet the member of the x-men, xphone he has the power to communicate with anyone any where.
Guest glynton Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 sounds more to me like it's an 'Ex-Phone'
Guest morpheus2702 Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 Jennifer Lopez should promote it... The Xy-Lo-phone :)
Guest Richie M Posted October 29, 2003 Report Posted October 29, 2003 The O2 XPhone (aka Voyager, aka E100, aka Qtek 8080) is on it's way 8) Er its not a E100 :)
Guest rikwebb Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Come on Orange, dont let O2 pip you to the post !! Give us the e200 NOW......
Guest Simon Desser Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Er its not a E100 :( Oops :)
Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 That goofy contest and XPHONE was the best they could come up with?! That makes my heart very very sad! :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Yeah, XPhone is the lamest name ever! It doesn't even fit very well with the name XDA! I think it will prove very interesting if launched in the UK, to have two operators offering identical products, with just their service, infrastructure and COSTS to differentiate. Orange perhaps should do all they can to persuade their Smartphone customers to lock in before the competition launch? P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest morpheus2702 Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I wonder how incendary XPV would have been?
Guest Simon Desser Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 "]Orange perhaps should do all they can to persuade their Smartphone customers to lock in before the competition launch? P Posted from my SmartPhone! Yeah, "unlimited" CHEAP GPRS would make me stay with Orange :)
Guest congeuro Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 O2 are also about to start ding the Motorola MPX2000 as well! Seems that Smartphones users wont be locked to Orange for too much longer......
Guest Maverick Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Any idea who won the contest. Dont remember what name I had suggested :-P
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I wonder how incendary XPV would have been? Hmm, i think Orange would have gone for infringments, copyrights, anything legal to stop them coming out with that one. As Paul mentioned, Orange should now offer existing SPV owners the chance to upgrade for around £100. SpaceCowboy
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Nobody knows, I would say pretty likely though... P Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 Windows Mobile supports prompt mode though, has there been any word on whether O2 or Orange will be implementing this certification mode on their 2k3 handsets...? Presumably not, but it's still a possiblity...
Guest nickcornaglia Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I wonder how incendary XPV would have been? Doesn't SPV stand for SOUND, PHONE, VIDEO or something like that. XPV may not make much sense if that's the case. My suggestion was: O2-One as in SmartphONE as in ONE device that does it all. That was killer! They should have picked that. :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 30, 2003 Report Posted October 30, 2003 I've heard rumours, but i'm not in a position to reveal anything at the moment. The whole certification thing has to be looked at from the view of the operators. The certification requirement is a way for networks to indemnify themselves against huge charges incurred by an application without a users knowledge, and other similar situations. Prompt mode may not be a sufficient level of security, as it may not be an explicit enough warning to the user, in that they are not indemnifying the network from costs incurred by the use of that application. If there are other models in 2k3 or any future OS versions that are more suited to this purpose, then you can be certain the networks will considered them. I would expect EVERY operator to use similar locking to Orange in the future, the stakes are too high. In addition, I would expect the certification model to extend to other platforms, eg Symbian. I have been a fierce critic of locking in the past, but in reality, as long as it is backed up by the right tools for development and low enough signing costs - something that doesn't exist currently - then app locking is actually a good thing. Guest drblow Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 What huge costs are you talking about Paul? I can't imagine what an app could do that would result in the user or network resulting in huge costs. & surely if the network covered themselves with adequate prompts & disclaimers, then apps could be installed in a 'user beware' kind of way. Nobody seems that bothered about downloading apps for the PC which invariably totally ruin your system! It's a case of if you download & run a non-signed app (eg. non Microsoft) then if it bashes up your system, that's your problem - you were warned!! I can't actually see app-certification on the SPV as anything more than a cynical way for O to make money from developers.
