Guest pique Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 :?: On the Moto MPX200 I have listed all my contacts on Outlook and then ran MS sync, which worked like a champ. My question is regarding the way the contact appear on my phone. I was hoping to have them sort by company name, but am having no luck. Can someone please advise me on how to have this happen Thanks
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 In contacts you can choose MenuFilter but you need to edit every contact individually in Categories (found when you edit individual contacts)
Guest FrankyG Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 First, Welcome :( maybe your best way to do this would be to assign the various companies as individual categories in Outlook, then when you sync with the mpx, you can filter your contacts that way. But you're right the default contact sorting is by name, not company. Does that make sense to you, if not, say so and I'll give you more detail...right now I'm leaving work... :D ps I have a quick way of assigning contacts to multiple categories, if you require. Edit: And I thought I was first to say hello... :)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 Yep sorry for my manners, Welcome pique to the site :) @FrankyG any chance of posting your quick way, I'd be interested to see it.
Guest pique Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 FrankG, if you can I'd appreciate your method for making this work
Guest FrankyG Posted October 31, 2003 Report Posted October 31, 2003 Ok, while viewing contacts in Outlook, change view to phone list. Create the categories you require in the master category list. back to the phone list view, Right click on one of the displayed columns and make sure that you have the 'Category' column included. Once that's done, right click again and select the 'Group By' box. Then drag the Category column onto the 'Group By' box, so that the view is now grouped on Categorys. Now all you have to do is select, or Multi-select using Ctrl-Click, and then drag your selected contacts into the appropriate category, which will update them ALL! This can be repeated as many times as required so that you can assign multiple categories to a contact. Be aware that when viewing your contact list in this way, a contact may appear more than once, depends on how many categories you've assigned to him/her. The contact is NOT duplicated, it's just the way this view works. SYNC! The updated contacts (with new categories) won't appear on your phone right away, from memory I think it needs a re-boot. Be sure to add 'Quick Pick' category for your fav contacts!! HTH If that's not clear enough I'll post some screenshots to make it easier, but let me know if that gets you up and running... EDIT, there, I posted some pics anyway ! VIEW 1 first though, then VIEW2. Cheersview2.jpgView1.jpg
Guest redman Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Hi. This really isn't a reply to the first question but a slightly different twist on a contacts question. I just purchased my MPx200 today and transferred all my contacts with no problem. As I enter phone numbers in Outlook, it auto-formats the number with parenthesis around the area codes. Then, when those contacts are transferred over, those numbers are coming across (i.e.... (201) 111-1111 ). The phone can't dial any of these numbers because I assume its dialing the parenthesis? Anyway to easily fix this, otherwise this makes the contact feature less important when the dialer is not able to dial the number correctly. Thanks for any help -bill
Guest FrankyG Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 yeah do a search for 'Outlook tools' or contact reformatter on this forum, it does all the formatting for you and can remove duplicate contacts. Backup first ...as always :)
Guest redman Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 yeah do a http://smartphone.MoDaCo.com/search.php>Search for 'Outlook tools' or http://smartphone.MoDaCo.com/viewtopic.php?t=806>Contact Reformatter on this forum, it does all the formatting for you and can remove duplicate contacts. Backup first ...as always :) Thanks FrankyG. I'm in the US and all that I'm reading here deals with European numbers. Oddly enough, it seems like sometimes my calls are going through, while other times its not. Something inconsistent is going on here..and I'm not sure what yet. Any other MPx200 users having the same issues? I'm a first time smartphone user and excited about getting this phone..just hope I can make it past this little issue and keep it sync'd without any problems with my pc. thanks, bill
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 I don't believe Contact Reformatter will work with US numbers, With your contact numbers you need to have either your local code, (sorry not sure on the format in the US) or you need to have the international dialing code prefix ie the UK has +44 Welcome to the site redman (bill) :) Now one way I can replicate your problem is to remove the + in the prefix, for some reason Outlook does this occaisionally :? Is this any help?
Guest redman Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Welcome to the site redman (bill) :( Now one way I can replicate your problem is to remove the + in the prefix, for some reason Outlook does this occaisionally :? Is this any help? Thanks! :) This sort of helps. I notice the "+" in Outlook but that never seems to make it over to the phone. However, it seems that the calls are making it out more times then its not today. Still trying to find a pattern in why one time it works and another it doesn't (giving me the ERROR message). I have however, found another frustrating problem. :-) I moved over the entire contact listing from Outlook and naturally, I have a ton of e-mail addresses that I don't have anything else for. So, from the phone, I deleted those contacts. Sync'd it back up and Bingo...it deleted all of those contacts out of Outlook!! I played with the sync rules and have not yet found where I can leave Outlook alone, regardless of the records stored on the phone. It appears that Outlook and my phone must match identically. I'm sure its something silly I am overlooking here? thanks, bill
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 2, 2003 Report Posted November 2, 2003 Go to OptionsSettings in Activsync you have some options there.
