I just read on SmartphoneThoughts that someone read on HowardForums that the i600 will cost: $499.99 with a 2-Year Contract $549.99 with a 1-Year Contract $649.99 with No Contract Outrageous....especially given that ATT just released their Motorola (A much nicer looking phone) for waaaaay less, just last week. :evil: When this is all confirmed....I'm looking at the Motorola & ATT again. I may be switching carriers one more time.

The mpx220 is a clamshell design which incorporates WM2k3, integrated camera, bluetooth etc. Possibly the greatest phone of all time, next to the E-200 :) Rumoured to be out end of Feb. spacecowboy

I think that it DOUBLE-SUCKS that the i600 is going to sell for 2x the price of the MPx200 AND Verizon's rate-plans are way more expensive than T-Mo's (or even AT&T's). Screw me when I buy the phone or screw me when I get my monthly bill -- one or the other, not both please. :( T-Mo's new to my city, so I'm thinking about waiting a few months and seeing if the build any more towers. If not, maybe by then Verizon will have lowered the i600 price down so it's not $50 cheaper than the i700 full PDA/phone combo. GOD I WISH GSM WORKED EVERYWHERE OVER HERE!

I just stumbled onto this site, and I am so frustrated with my present carrier Verizon's two Samsung smartphone offerings (here in the United States) which are both priced around $500, when ATT offers the Motorola MPx200 for so much less.... I almost was going to switch carriers on the spot and buy the Motorola (I presently still have a StarTak, if you can believe that), but the guy at the store informed me that its coverage isn't as good as my present phone. He said the next version of the MPx (the 220??) would have a different something or other, that would improve that phone's coverage in many areas. As a relative ignoramus on the really technical aspects of cell phone functioning, could someone explain what the difference is between CDMA (my present band, I think), GSM, 900, 1800, etc....?
Guest paulkbiba Posted February 7, 2004 Report Posted February 7, 2004 The 220 has supposedly been postponed to the 2nd quarter. It's an upgrade to the 200 and looks very promising. However, its a GSM phone and AT&T is building out its GMS network and has a long ways to go. They only have coverage in major metropolitan areas, at present, and even there it can be spotty. Be sure to check for coverage if you decide to go this route.

They are operating on the 1900 band in my area. I cant use them because it doesnt work in my home AT ALL! Verizon's CDMA network has never failed me. It has work flawlesly. But they know this....then bend you over a barrel and charge you out the ying yang for phones and service. Their phone selection is also VERY limited. GSM is worldwide and the phone offerings (as long as they are SIM Unlocked) is endless. Cingular only uses the 850 network in my area, so they were not an option as I dont think there are any 850 smartphones available yet. AT&T's GSM uses both the 850 and 1900 bands in my area. Though I'm not utilizing the 850 band...their 1900 band has worked flawlessly in my home and everywhere else I've gone. I havn't found a dead spot yet in my area. So thanks to ATT I was able to buy a $69.00 smartphone and return to the GSM flexability I need.

I travel nationally almost every week, so I need a phone that will work wherever I go.... or as close as I can get. I'ver tried them all, and it seems Verizon is the best solution for me. But, I was just in Best Buy and I played around with an MPx200, and I was struck by the difference in quality. Maybe some of it can be contributed to my familiarty with my i600, but the Motorola felt so.... flimsy to me. And the button action.... just felt like..... like I wasn't sure it would work the next time I pushed it. Well, maybe I'd get used to the Mpx200 if I was with ATT, but the better coverage (for me) and my perception of the mpx200 made me happy that I went with the i600.

Those are a lot of extras. the cradle alone usually goes for 100.00 and the extended btty is usally around 70-80. i think the price is somewhat on target.

It's certainly expensive, but it's got good build quality and like pmerritt says a lot of accessories that don't always come in the bundle. You know, I hesitate to say it, but maybe the Mpx200 is UNDERpriced. I was in an ATT store in Dallas helping a friend get set up with an Mpx200. We talked to the salesmen about the sorry state that ATT's customer service seems to be in (really long hold times, etc). We asked if they were understaffed in that area or what. To my surprise, in a moment of frustration, he exclaimed, "You know, if they didn't have us giving away this hardware all the time, maybe we wouldn't have to lay off half the employees!!" He then took a breath, apologized and gave my friend his Mpx200 for $89. :lol:

Verizon has a good network so they don't need to take a big loss on the phones up front to get customers. 2. Qualcomm has several patents on CDMA technology so their monopoly on that technology lets them charge lots for the CDMA chipsets. I talked the verizon sales guy down to $375 by mentioning an employee purchase plan that I could use instead of buying from him.
