According to digitimes Compal Communications are going to release a clamshell smartphone with integrated camera running Windows Mobile 2003 next year.

Compal Communications expects its second smartphone to enter mass production in the third quarter of next year, said company president Henry Lee in a presentation to reporters from Asia Computer Weekly, DigiTimes and The Wall Street Journal yesterday.

The handset, code-named the AR22, will feature Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 OS and a Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 730 processor. The clamshell handset will also come equipped with a built-in digital camera.

Lee declined to disclose the client’s name but revealed that Compal will have a third major ODM customer next year in addition to Motorola and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

The company unveiled its first smartphone last year. The AR11-codenamed device, in a candy bar design, used Microsoft’s Smartphone 2002 OS and a TI OMAP 710 processor. Although Compal manufactured some samples, the company has never commercially launched the handset. The samples have been used for Microsoft’s Smartphone Developer Kit.

Lee said the company will not consider developing a smartphone running on a competing smartphone operating system in the near future due to limited production capacity.
