Guest Simon Desser Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Another story from digitimes. They reckon that Mitac are planning to release 10 smartphones in 2004  Mitac International, which launched the Mio 8380 Microsoft Smartphone in June, expects to launch at least 10 Microsoft Smartphones next year, said Samuel Wang, general manager of Mitac’s Mobile Communications Unit. Wang demonstrated samples of four of the upcoming smartphones, including the Mio 8390, which was debuted at Computex Taipei 2003, in a media briefing yesterday. All four models feature a clamshell design, a built-in digital camera and Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 OS. Mitac has been shipping the Mio 8380 to mobile phone operators in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia. Shipments of the Mio 8380 will reach 40,000 units this year, according to Wang. He declined to provide a smartphone shipment forecast for next year. Sounds a bit strange, but who knows :?
Guest Crispy Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Sounds insane, but if they already "demonstrated samples of four of the upcoming smartphones", then I see no reason as to why another 6 over 13 months should be a problem :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Less than 40,000 Mios sold so far? I would have thought that was pretty poor... P
Guest Brody Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 10? I find that hard to believe but even if its just the 4 that were demonstrated then lets hope we see them in Europe!
Guest morpheus2702 Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Maybe some Nokia personnel have defected to Mitac? Can't wait for the 8390i!
Guest Rob.P Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 Tis a new market, best way to get a foothold is to flood it with your products, that's how it seems they are playing it.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 What could the variances be between the 10 smartphones?
Guest sabio_proeliat Posted November 4, 2003 Report Posted November 4, 2003 8390i? Where did you get info about that one? :?
Guest thetruth Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Wow. 10! I bet all the unannounced phones are CDMA too :)
Guest kmon Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Wow. 10! I bet all the unannounced phones are CDMA too :) CDMA?
Guest smartphone-web.com Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 CDMA? CDMA is the Network used mainly in North America. The GSM Cover in America is pretty poor.
Guest kmon Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Ahh cheers mano.. you learn summit new everyday......
Guest Brewdogg18 Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 CDMA is the Network used mainly in North America. The GSM Cover in America is pretty poor. I have been a US GSM member since att released it back a year and a half ago. The coverage is getting better. I am glad to be a part of ATT wireless which actually uses GSM, while another company (I say another cause I cant think of its name) released its own system called cdma 2000, which is mainly gsm type network but with a different name, and different compatibilities. CDMA 2000 to me, is this companies US Naive way of saying, we are better then the rest of the world with their GSM, we will make our own system, ugh. Dear USA companies, being compatible with the rest of the world is not a bad thing!
Guest victor_RUS Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 8390 will be available only in January 2004 :)
