IBM Netvista / Intel 82801DB USB & Activesync problem...

Hi,

I've recently taken delivery of a new IBM Netvista M42 type 8305 in work.

After setting up all my required apps I installed Activesync and tried to sync my phone (E100 SPV) without success.

Everytime I try to create a partnership Activesync fails to detect my phone. I've tested the cable and phone on my old machine and eveything works fine. I've tested other USB items on the new PC and they also work fine. After spending approximately 2 hours following microsofts web based troubleshooting guide (removing drivers / activesync itself) I gave up.

The new machine uses an Intel 82801DB/DBM USB host controller. Does anyone know of any existing issues with this chipset running in Win2K with Activesync 3.7.1?

Cheers

Alex.

I've checked quite a few newsgroups over the past day and found many references to Pocket PC users who have the same problem with various PDA's connecting to ActiveSync on machines that have the same chipset.

During my troubleshooting I think I remember reading that ActiveSync may not work correctly (or at all) if your device is connected through a USB Hub. Unfortunately the hub is built into the board so it looks like I'm going to have to go back to IR........

I wonder if this is something which could be addressed in a new release of ActiveSync.

First things first...

Are you using Activesync 3.7.1, and secondly, did you plug your phone in before you installed ActiveSync (not a good idea)?

Hi Paul,

Yes I'm using ActiveSync 3.7.1, it works fine via an IR module attached to a serial port but not via USB. When I installed AS the phone was not connected. I have followed the online troubleshooting guide without any success. Initially I didn’t think the sync problem was related to the hardware until I stumbled across a few old posts in a PocketPC newsgroup which described the same problem.

My old machine was also a NetVista which had an integrated 82801BA controller which worked perfectly. I admit I may have jumped to a conclusion, pointing fingers at the USB hardware compatibility with AS but I can’t see what else could be causing the problem.

Any other ideas?

Cheers

Just for info I continued using my sync and charge cable to charge the phone even though AS would not work. After installing Service Pack 4 for Win2K I noticed a green AS icon in my tray......

Whatever the problem was SP4 has fixed it!

Cheers

Alex
