spve100 woes, locks, data loss and wobblyness - my story

ive had a *few* issues with my smartphone...and its not a week old yet...

i breifly searched for smilar on the forums, but didnt fnd anything the same so i thought id share my tales with you all.

The first issue wasnt oranges problem entirely... i'd lusted after the XDA for ages but im not a fan of the o2 network... so i waited. orange brought out the spv and i wet my pants with glee. i ordered one on the web, putting my work details in for delivery since i work 8:00-6:00.

2 weeks later after a few problems with credit cards, i iget an email from orange, they are unwilling to deliver to work and i need to pay an extra £5 for some reason or other (i forget)...oki, i'm owed some holiday, so i can easy take a day off...i call and i ask delivery date since i'd have to book time off...'some time in the next 2 weeks , between 9 and 5' - jokingly say my only option is to cancel the order and before i know the guy says 'thanks then - cancelled... bye.' and im hung up on... not so impressed. strike one against orange.

I find a 3rd party selling spv's as im kinda desperate for one of these babies and this place is willing to shiip to work... order online and have to email them scans of bills and passport... seems a little weird for an internet order but i comply. 3 weeks later im still waiting for confirmation...they dont have any in stock...will ship as soon as they do. wait and wait and wait... they tell me they arent getting them in now, but could ship me an e100 instead, no extra charge... bonus i think to myself. 3 weeks down line im getting impatient. ive seen these babies in shops. i nearly bought one but expected it to arrive the same day i bought it and have 2 (thats my luck all over) - they are apparently only been sold via orange directly first and later they will get theres and ship. i live with it and wait ... and wait... and wait.. and after some toing and froing, i loose my temper and ask them if they even know what a mobile phone looks like. they cancel my order.

i try to order on web again via orange direct... this time getting it in my mums name etc (since im using her CC anyways) and it arrives a few days latter, she travels the 40 miles to give it to me. i am overjoyed, and for a while at least i am happy.

this was last wednesday. only took me around 4 months to get the phone.

i unlock it while on train and asap sign in to msn. i dont need to tell u guys that it didnt work. not ever so impressed. im in london seeing g/f and my super new internet phone has no msn. not a good start. i hook it up to laptop once there, read some forums realise im not only one, and move on. orange has no help at all, bit disapointed. imov is suggested but thats not free. i find agilitymessenger. i need to unlock my phone. so my brand new phone has a fault that ether requires me to 'hack' my phone or pay extra money to resolve... its not even 2 hours old yet. have to admit tho, im still giggling with excitement, and being a coder, unlocking phone is done the very next morning, and agility is installed and all is good, bar the fact i ihave all my msn contacts in my directory and no integration to use them. a bit of a pisser but never mind. i keep reading the forums...

spve200 is barely a week away and its better than my brand new phone in every single way. thats depressing. i deal with it, with a few huffs and grumbles.

doom and other toys are duely installed and a nice happy 64meg sd goes in the socket. i am fairly happy and toys are installed. the gprs modem (using connection on laptop) is a bit ropey, but thats not an advertised feature and my laptop is kinda ass.

monday comes, time to return to the wilderness (chichester to those who dont know) and spve100 throws up its first scarey issue..."enter password"

wtf. what password. "incorrect....try again in 30 seconds..." "try again in 60 seconds..."

i do what any good network admin would do at this point... i panic and remove the battery...give it a min or two...yey, it is back...wait there. oh. guess ll be setting up all my settngs again...erm. and downloading those themes again too. and my ring tones... ah well... it IS windows after all (i try to see the funny side rather than hurling phone)

few hours go by, no issues. then i have a pin code request... similar situatiion to above, apart from on returning, i have no reception for an hour...

tonight i get asked for sim unlock code. now this sets me into panic... friend had this on his SPV (not e100) and hasnt been able to make a call for 2 months and orange have been rather unhelpful to him. as per, powerng down doesnt work... so its a battery reset AGAIN... and when the phone comes back, it tells me its dong a reset and then t reboots. once back its a mishmash of my settings and the factory defaults... including the camper bg which i had deleted... but worst of all... its re-app-locked the phone...

i decide enough is enough... the fx for msn is a windows 2003 phone and the phone i bought is msn capable so think im within my rights (and within 14 day money back period) to get the spv e200 (i think its within oranges best interests as per month because of my gprs package and so on, i will be payng near on £100 before calls are taken into account)

i call 150 and explain... and theres no way can do a swap since the phone s not out officially...ill have to wait... and pay for an upgrade since i'll be out of the 14 day period... obvously this doesnt seem fair to me so i try to explain its not my fault ii have the issues and i think orange should help me resolve it. explain now that msn wont work so im passed to the 'data dept'... who complain about me breaking up and then... silence... the phones hung.

and im now here, wondering, should i stick it out with this phone? maybe pay for upgrade :) maybe get money back and wat for e200... maybe move to XDA2 on o2 (ew ew ew) maybe get the mitac thingy? maybe just get money back and go back to virgin on 3310.

itd be nice to hear other peoples opinions, and i'll keep this thread updated with my actions so other people can see how well/bad orange deal with this as i dont think im the only one paying the price for being an 'early adopter'

Sorry to hear of your SPV problems djboo :)

Many people are now looking to purchase a SPV E200 with smartphone 2003 so the advice would have been to wait a few more weeks. Especially after the 4 months of trying to buy an E100

There have definitely been a few (minor ) problems with the SPV over its time and although I personally feel this is the best phone I have had I am now ready to move on to something better.

decide enough is enough... the fx for msn is a windows 2003 phone and the phone i bought is msn capable so think im within my rights (and within 14 day money back period) to get the spv e200 (i think its within oranges best interests as per month because of my gprs package and so on, i will be payng near on £100 before calls are taken into account)
If you ARE planning to return your phone using the 14 day money back period then I would probably do this sooner rather than later.

thanks for the advice... not knowing exactly when the e200 is out is a bind -

if its within my 14 days then orange are likely to be far more flexble i expect. i agree, the e100 is a fantastic tool... msn on the go is amazing. but i cant use it as it was intended, and that riles me, and the continuous data loss scares me. lucky i got the sd card or id be mad pissed off.

its nearly ended up against the wall several times already. i think a long call to orange will ensue tommorow

and it continues... i attempt to reunlock phone using web page... i do it. i wait. then something happens...ooh goodie:

addconfig ...waiting...

check IPSM....waiting...

check pass.

press 'OK' to re-start the device.

(second time this has happenend)

erm. and everything is cleared again. oh the joy. have i got a rogue unit, or is this normal?

Errr :? It sounds like your SPV has become possesed

A hard reset is usually used as a last resort to recover a phone from a critical condition. The fact that your phone seems to be continously restoring IPSM means that it's possibly a faulty unit. The request for SIM unlock code is a bit suspicious too although you could try replacing you SIM card. I would usually recommended a manual hard reset from the bootloader but my only worry would be that WINCE was in any way corrupted. As you are still within the 14 day period then I would recommend passing this directly to Orange CS.

I reckon my phone has initiated a self reset maybe two or three times over the last 6 months and thats with hacking it to death :)

Hmmm, maybe its fate

Just spent about an hour an a half on the phone with orange. its not looking to helpful. guess i'll be changing to a different network after all :)

the last half of the call was some CS guy being rather unhelpful and telling me it wasnt his fault the advtertising is wrong (Re the msn problem - which they still advertise as a feature of the e100 despite it never gonna work again) and in the end he said 'stop quoting trading standards at me and just call them why dont you, its not my problem.'

so i have. as far as i am concerned, orange advertised a phone that can do msn, and i think im in my rights to demand a phone that can do this.

Personally I would request a refundreplacement, hopefully you are

within your 14 day period, but it does depend on how long you want

to wait for the E-200

There does seem to be a fault with the phone andor the SIM card,

as you should only be asked for a SIM unlock code if you put a non-Orange sim in :?

From what you are saying it sounds like there is also a fault with the

OS hense the Partial resets you are encountering, I would recommend

doing a hard Reset or if you prefer another reason to request a replacement etc.

Regarding MSN there will be a fix and hopefully this should come with

the new update that is about to be released.
