Guest Fragmaster Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Hi I am new here. You now can play Elite on your Smartphone! Well sort of anyway, you can play Elite (the full game) by using the SmartNES emulator. This port was THE best according to Ian Bell who part produced this game. You know where to get SmartNES, here is the ROM. http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/index.htm http://www.users.waitrose.com/~elitearc2/e...ve/b7120500.zip Also please do not remove this link to the ROM, it is legal, it is hosted by Ian Bell himself, and even David has allowed this if you read the section about it on his site. Thanks and enjoy :) edit: added direct link here.
Guest midnight Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 thats the daft thing about elite, all versions are available for free, but there is no way david braben will allow new versions to be made (i know i enquired about the license for a smartphone version)
Guest Fragmaster Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Yes indeed, this is the closest thing I think that we will get to Elite on the Smartphone. Like on the PalmOS there was a BRILLIANT version made and then David said no way they were going to let him release it. Totally out of order in my opinion, :)
Guest midnight Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 not out of order, it is his game, so he's well in his rights to say it :)
Guest Fragmaster Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 That is one way of looking at it, but then actually it isn't his game, its half his game, Ian Bell owns half also, and he actually gave his utter gratefulness that people actually still care about the game enough to be porting it to new systems, if you look on his site and the PalmOS site, there is a lot of stuff about David that he has said and done including lack of communication to developers about permission to use Elite.
Guest Fragmaster Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Hey, would you like other people to make money with your software? Besides the fact, that some do, i never intended to make money with elite. It was planned as a freeware game and i even offered DB a free splash screen with some ads for his company (this offer isn't valid anymore). Did you really expect DB/Frontier development to give their ok for this game? Yes, indeed. That's what some of their web pages say: [We will]allow people to access the source code and legitimately update the games - bringing them up to date with current technology. We also hope that the creators of some of the Elite/Frontier tribute games will join the Club. :) taken from the PalmOS elite site, which is linked on the ian bell site above.
Guest muff Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 as far as I'm aware, Ian Bell sold his half of Elite to David Braben years ago - before Elite 2 (Frontier) etc were released so it's totally Braben's call as to what material is allowed out there
Guest Fragmaster Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 A few days after i made that post, an email from Ian Bell arrived, asking where I bought the game, the publisher, etc. He was obviously concerned in the sales of Elite+. He said "I'm curious about ongoing sales since they are unlicensed.". That indicate that he, atleast at that point, had the copyight for Elite. This was posted in 1999, so he may of sold since then but if he had of sold it would not of been in his interests to ask this.
Guest muff Posted November 6, 2003 Report Posted November 6, 2003 taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(computer_game) after a quick web search :- In 1999/2000, a dispute occured between Ian Bell and David Braben regarding the former's decision to make available all versions of the original Elite on his personal web site. The dispute has now ended; the various versions are available on Bell's site. and I've found various other stuff on the web that suggests they came to some form of agreement at the end of 1999 as to quite what that agreement is, I don't know all I do know is that Ian Bell seems willing to let the community loose on Elite (though possibly only in freeware) - but David Braben refuses all requests to this end so whilst the existing versions that are out there can apparently be freely downloaded and emulated - no work based on the original data + code may be produced by anyone but Braben so no direct port may be made for the SPV :)
Guest drblow Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 I'm so disappointed!! When I saw this post today I thought somebody had made this playable!! I DL'ed this ROM ages ago, but the emulator never played it right - screen was all corrupt! After reinstalling this today, I got the same results! Does anybody have this game working properly?? If so, can you post instructions on how it's done??
Guest midnight Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 so no direct port may be made for the SPV well, unless frontier make it themselves, which is kind of the impression i got when i asked if we could develop it, dont quote me on it of course, but i think they are making mobile device versions  They have just released Darxide on pocketpc and it is pretty damn cool, so who knows, we may get lucky
Guest Scarfman007 Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 And they're releasing it for Series 60 phones . . .
Guest drblow Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 Does anybody have this game working properly?? If so, can you post instructions on how it's done?? Aw - c'mon!! At least tell me it doesn't work & put me out of my misery!
