im sure lots of u would like 2 see mame on the ms phones, i know space monkey started on it but didnt have time 2 finish. so i had an idea who would be interested in donating a pound in a developers fund? with all the peeps on here we could be lookin at a good fund 4 parttime developers 2 cover the time and effort of developing things like mame and others. the setup could be users request things they want on smartphone over a period of time then the most popular goes 2 a poll vote. the final 4 favs would then be given a money amount 4 making them, say £100 for instance. the developer on this site if they dont mind of course. could choose which one they want 2 develop. think of the things we could see games like x men, frogger, golden axe, street fighter and so on whlle also helping developers with cost of there time. regards tom. it's an interesting idea KM, but the simple fact is that people wont donate

SpaceMonkey has had a donate button on his page for a long time now, and so far has only received $11

on top of that - emulation takes a lot of processing power, so I doubt we will see a playable Mame until the phones get a lot faster

bear in mind that even on 400Mhz PPC's the Mame is farily limited in what it can play

the alternative is a clone of the games, but then you can run into copyright issues

I know it's only an example price, but £100 is a tiny amount compared to the time a game takes to make - even something like space invaders and pacman are a fairly serious undertaking (and I should know)

so like I say, an interesting idea, but I just dont think it will work :)

The problem is that only a few games would ever be playable on the SmartPhone.. Forget anything advanced. Space Invaders may run alright, but the 8080 CPU that it runs out is only clocked at 2mhz. Basically, most of the arcade classics that a mame port could play have already been cloned and SPV'd anyway. Plus most of them are probablay available on the nes/gb, which is another method of playing them.

As muff said, it's an interesting idea. But the money wouldn't make a difference. Many view mame as being sluggishly coded anyway, as a lot of the drivers are coded by outside sources and therefore usually unoptimised. Sure, there could be an SPV port, but it probably wouldn't be anything more than a novelty.

I think the idea is appealing. Not as stated (muff has outlined the problems) but the concept itself.

THE issues with donation is: "why donate for something I can use for free" and that's a general attitude.

What I like about the idea is, that it is not actualy about donating but rather about fund raising. Fund raising takes place before work is done, I guess you see my point by now.

Several models could be envisaged. I will outline one below.

1. Poll on Modaco: "Application/games Wishlist"

2. A topic on say the top ranking 3 is opened

3. People can commit an amount of money they would invest, if the project gets started (credit card information has to be added to the MoDaCo profile), thus a virtual account is created

4. Modaco contacts suitable developers and offers them the project with a cap budget (close to the balance of the virtual account)

5. In case developer team accepts, the credit card of people who have committed money is debited and the money transfered to a project account

6. The application is being developed and tested

7. Money is paid to developers, Modaco keeps a share as a transaction fee

8. Modaco markets the product on its site at a reasonable price

9. Investors get a free copy of the application and a share of the turn over generated by the sales according to their investement. Modaco again keeps a percentage of the sales

What do you think?
