Guest Pagemakers Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 We hear a lot about Microsoft Exchange and the ability sync with it etc. In easy terms, what is Exchange, what can we do with it - SPV-wise, and is it expensive? Thanks guys.
Guest beersoft Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 (s)exchange is a mail server and costs loads (£500 for the server + £50 per user iirc) and can be very evil it does alsorts of shiny things with mail, contacts, calendar stuff, my task this week at work is to install it and get it to dance for me  paul/will/richie know more about it than me, i have only supported it from an isp point of view and that was 4 years ago. later Owen "no fun quote here"
Guest mores Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 it's usually used in larger corporations, all data is stored on the exchange server. this not only lets you sync on the go, but it also allows you to see your colleague's calendar. for example, you're talking to a client, and you need to arrange a meeting where someone from another department needs to attend as well. so you just invite him through outlook, and you can see if he's available or not. pretty cool stuff, but i wouldn't dare to set it up for myself at home
Guest Pagemakers Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 OK. Thanks guys, not for me then! I thought it was a way of allowing me to sync with my PC's Outlook while out of the office......Can anything do that apart from Exchange?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 Only if you get can get onto your company LAN via VPN, then you can sync over the network... P
Guest Strongarm Posted November 11, 2003 Report Posted November 11, 2003 With MS Mobile Information Server you can sync your EMail, Calendar + Contacts with Exchange also via Standard Internet (or through GPRS Conn to Internet) This is included in the MS Exchange Server 2003 product. Overall pretty good functionality our company uses this, i can sync my phone via GPRS on the go or Sync via pass through internet connection when cradled.
