UPDATE! 15.10.04

Just passed the 4 year mark!!

Thanks to all involved, need more active members though. Still not bad for a team still less than a year old!

We're slowly climbing up the league table but we haven't had any new members for a while now. We need to get recruiting! Keep up the good work everyone!

Since the protein folding hasn't gone through the roof lets see if I can persuade some more of your to donate your spare processing power to this.

It's similar to the folding project for those of you who have seen it. However i think the interface is better looking and it interferes with your system less.

For those of you who don't know what this is....basically it uses your pcs spare processing power, while idling or doing something CPU unintensive to "perform automated docking of flexible ligands to a protein's binding site".

Current projects are working on a cure for smallpox and cancer fighting drugs, very worthwhile i'm sure you'll agree!

Join the Modaco team here

All you need to do is download a little software, you can run it as a screensaver, or have it running in the background. It's priority is set to the lowest possible setting so it will never take resources away from other programmes. I personally never shut it down and frequently deathmatch with it running

Help a good cause!

Here's the shpiel;

"A new way to help

A landmark research project has begun that allows people to make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

The United Devices Cancer Research Project is asking you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.

It's safe and easy

There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The project software cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine but project-specific information. It just allows your computer to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. Each individual computer analyzes a few molecules and then sends the results back over the Internet for further research. This project is anticipated to be the largest computational chemistry project ever undertaken and represents a genuine hope to find a better way to fight cancer.

The computational power to perform research of this scale is only available through the generosity of individuals like you."

Cheers

Mike

When it's running it looks like this,

The Cancer research idea is great and I used to run that very program. But when I found it researching Smallpox I was a bit more concerned - especially as it was sponsered by the US military.

You can choose which projects you would like it to run, so if you wanted you could have it only running for cancer research.

I've been running this for a couple of years now, but cant join the Modaco group ;) cos i'm on the Easynews team as they give me a free gig for every 15 days processing :lol:/

just a quick word to the current members......i am still taking part in this myself!! i know i haven't returned a result for days now (and a few of you have returned several, thanks!!!) but the task that my pc has been designated is taking vast amounts of processing time!

keep up the good work!!

thanks again, mike

Keep going guys, I'm getting quite hooked on this.

Our fledgling Modaco team is already at position 28,882. We should aim for the top 10,000 by the new year. :lol:/

A few more members from the vast Modaco user base and I reckon we can do it! So come on folks, get signed up!

Also make sure you edit your profile to state your home country so that it gets credited with your PCs efforts too.

Nice one!!!!

(any chance of a sticky mods)

Also on your profile, aswell as selecting your country (didn't realise about that one, thanks krankie), increase your storage space if you're prepared to, you'll then get more points!

PS: We're ranked 28,258 in terms of pointage now! Most likely we'll be even higher in a few hours time.

We've been honoured by having THE man himself Paul [MVP] has joined the fight! Thanks also to snuffi for joining today!

Only 50mins till the next stats update. I finally managed to add some more points today and i'm sure some of you lot also have! see if we can beat the 20000 position for points by the end of the month!

Ambitious i know, but we're only gettin faster at returning results now!

Also I've been looking at the stats, basically modaco has the potential to increase the number of members registered for the uk (50 somat thousand) by a HUGE 50%! And with only 2000 members we would be straight up there to second of the leader table (the top with 30 odd thousand members is beyond modaco at the mo)!

Let's make it happen

Thanks all, mike

And another one....

Just replaced my SETI client - seems like this one might be more useful!

I've set it as a scheduled task to run at system startup, using my username and password to 'RunAs' (instead of the shortcut in the startup folder). This way, it runs all the time regardless of which member of the family is logged in at the time.

Small contribution to the team so far, but if everyone did the same....

Exactly! I feel embarrased by my contributions so far. Paul is kicking ass! I might start leaving my pc on when i'm away at work now to try get some more pointage on the board.

I like the idea of seti, but like you say, i think this is probably more useful, and even if you did find something with the seti software it'd be treated by mass amounts of sceptism.

Today's stats for team Modaco show that we have broken through the one year barrier. That's a lot of crunching. Not bad for a 6 week old team. Keep going everyone. =D>

We should have broken the barrier 2 days ago but some of the stats went missing. Good work everyone.

Yeah well done everyone!

Lets hope things pick up over the new year. And see if we can get some more members!

Cheers

Mike
