Guest andypandy Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 I'm about to purchase my first smartphone ( I think) and I was contemplating the MPx200 or the mio 8380. I was actually leaning towards the MPx200 when I found out it doesn't support Java! As my main activities with the phone will be watching movies, reading ebooks and (most important of all) developing Java apps, I guess the MPx200 is out. But from what I've read on the forum here there seems to be problems with the kvm or Java Virtual Machine if you will... Is this some kind of Microsoft kvm or is it Java standard according to Sun? I read an article about sun suing microsoft for not adhering to Java standard... Also I'd like to know how you guys feel about the phone... I mean I know most of the specs and stuff but how does it feel? Are there lots of little (or big) annoying things about the phone? Is it really big compared to other clamshells? And so on... As the MPx200 is definitely out I've started to look at the SE P900 but the downside with that is the stupid memorysticks, not clamshell and also that I had my heart set on a smartphone OS phone (but not if the JVM is some weird kind)... Please please please give me some input so that I can decide.
Guest nokia7190 Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Mio 8380 JAVA support: 1. Mio 8380 runs MIDP not exactlly J2ME. Which means can not run J2ME JAVA program but MIDP JAVA program. 2. Since Mio 8380 have only around 5MB ram available for user's application. MIDP application plus JVM runs at somewhat unaccpetable performance. MPx200 JAVA support: 1. MPx200 have around 10 MB ram available for user's application. Unforture, there is no MIDP JVM for it (offically). However, There are many people report installed Mio 8380 MIDP JVM on SPV. 2. MPx200 is slower than Mio 8380 Finally, 1. Mio 8380 (sold for most of the market) do not came with MIDP JVM. 2. Mio 8380 (sold in China) do came with MIDP JVM. 3. Obtaining MIDP JVM could be a problem.
Guest andypandy Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 What is the difference between J2ME JAVA program and MIDP JAVA program? Sounds like I'll have to skip the clamshell design, settle for a 128Mb memorystick duo memorycard and get the Sony Ericsson P900...
