Contact Limits ANd filtering

Are any of you aware of any limitations on the number of contacts possible on a smartphone?

A client of mine has 2400 contacts and has assigned two or three categories to each contact. While the contacts come over in full with Avtivesync 3.7.1. When you open up each contact on an individual basis, you can see the category, but no filter is available to narrow his view.

Any thoughts, remedies or third party software?

What kind of filtering do you require?

As far as I'm aware the only filter available is to display the contact list based on category, but once you select an undividual contact then....erm...why would you want to filter anything at this point? See HERE for possibly useful info on contact categories/filtering.
