I'm in the market to buy two printers: one black and white and one colour. Can anyone recommend what I should buy? I'm looking for mid-market sort of products.

I have heard that HP printers are pretty popular? Any particular reason why?

I have a HP 6122 (dont ask at rip off w... i mean pc world cos apparently they don't exist to them)! I got it from ccl computers for around 130 notes.

It's very quiet and has a funky paper type sensor so you get good qualty prints regardless of the paper. It will produce photo quality prints on plain paper, tho obviously better on photo quality paper (somewhere in the region of 4800 optimised dpi, or 2400 non optimised). It's reasonably fast too.

What i will knock it on tho is the paper feed mechanism isn't a patch on an epsons. I only had a few jams in the years i owned an epson. This has jammed a few times in the short while i've had it. Sometimes the paper will feed in wonky, but hey this could all be my fault!

Another plus for it tho is that it comes with an automatic duplexer which is very handy.

If you want one for just black and white i think you oughta be looking for a laser printer (if you aren't allready) i can't really help you there, tho the HP one at work runs a treat!

Got a HP Deskjet 3822 (green version of 3820) for £80 from PC World, resolution is 2400*1200 (too good for most paper).

Great printer, esp for photos - don't know if it's still available though, or what its replacement is if not. Cartridges are £23 for B&W and £30 (£45 large) for colour, so not too bad.

Not had any problems with it since I bought it...

The HP print cartridge has the print head on, so when you buy a new cartridge you get a new print head. This is good as it means that if the head blocks up it can be solved by new cartridge. However, it means that cartridges are more expensive.

I have an Epson Stylus Color 680 which works fine (2 years). On the downside, if the head blocks you have to throw away the printer. On the plus side, replacement cartrdiges can be bought for £5.99 (B&W) and £8.39 (colour). from here

Personally if I were you I would buy a brother laser printer 1430 at only £129 from here you can't go wrong. I ran a 2000 user network and used these. Not one problem in 2 years!
