Guest smeg36 Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 Obviously, a smartphone can access the internet on the phone, that is one of the main reasons I am getting it. However, when I am going to be browsing for a while, it would be easier to have the 3.5" screen of my Axim. I read here that the SPV can be used as a modem for my laptop, and I am planning on using that when I have my laptop with me, but I don't always. What I was wondering is if it is possible to use it as a modem with my Axim. If so, what is the best method, or are there more than one methods. Can I use the IR port? Is there an Axim to SPV cable as with other cell phones? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.
Guest budda Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Check out the "Modem Link" accessory installed on the phone under programs->Accessories->modem link The connection options are serial, Ir or USB.
Guest 802256 Posted December 27, 2003 Report Posted December 27, 2003 Anyone who knows a suitable USB modem drivers for SPV that works with Windows XP? I tried one from www.coolsmartphone.com, but Windows XP did not recognize the driver during manual modem installation.
Guest smeg36 Posted December 27, 2003 Report Posted December 27, 2003 I went to the Articles forum, and there was one there about using the SPV as a USB Modem. That is where I got the driver for my XP laptop, and it is working great for me.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted December 28, 2003 Report Posted December 28, 2003 If you get the AXIM to talk to the phone at all you are doing well :) If you manage it, let us know as there are quite a few AXIM owners here who have tried and failed (using IR) Posted from my AXIM
Guest smeg36 Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 I have had no success getting my Ax to work at all yet. They seem to realize each other are there, and establish a connection, but they won't send any info to each other. Have you been to Aximsite? This is my second home now, right after them.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Been there a few times, but as it's mainly US based not many people there with Smartphones. (not been there for a while though)
Guest smeg36 Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 True, not many smartphones at all. Actually, I don't know of any. I had to work with the Admin to get the mobile site to work with smartphone browsers because they weren't originally. I found a new method that may work to get my Ax connected through my SPV, so I will try it out today when I go into town and get a signal. I will post me results.
Guest revolution.cx Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 It works! I have the latest ROM update for the SPV (wow what a difference). An Axim X5 with the Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 upgrade. On SPV: Accessories->Modem Link Choose IRCOM Choose Activate On Axim: Create a new modem connection, choose "Generic IRDA". I'm in the US using T-Mobile with unlimited GPRS for $10/month. I just entered *99# for the phone number to dial. No user name or password. Hit OK or Connect and bango, you're on! Those jokers at T-mobile have HTTPS and Terminal Services ports blocked though. Have to pony up another $5 or $10 a month to get them unblocked I believe. Anyway, it works great. So I can travel with my SPV and either my Axim (ir modem) or laptop (usb modem cable). Too bad I can't use the IR keyboard on the Axim at the same time as the SPV is connected.
