Guest Honest John Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 I bought my last 2 phones from them. Their financial deals look great and I am looking forward to my cash back. However.............. be careful. Despite faxing a clear order for a phone full stop, I found that I was signed up for a direct debit not only for Insurance at £4.99 per month but also for Technical Support at £6.99 per quarter!! Although the Insurance gives you a free quarter's insurance (if you remember to cancel it), the Technical Support kicks in within a month. There is no telephone number to cancel this so you have to write to separate companies in Fleet to cancel the direct debit you never gave permission for in the first place. Ring their customer services and they seem unaware that it is not permitted to sign customers up to additional expense without their permission and then expect them to have to contact the 2 companies and your bank. And have you ever tried to stop a Direct Debit before it is set up? So, just beware and kick up a fuss when they try to slip that one past you. I wondered why they wanted my bank details to take 1p from for a free phone. Better still, fax them instructions that you DO NOT WANT insurance or technical support. I included the next bit in another post, but it may be of interest. Incidentally with Onestopphoneshop, try looking at the deal for higher tariffs. For example, the E200 on the £30 tariff is £34.99. On the £45 OVP tariff you get an extra 100 minutes per month for £15 more. So if you run it for 6 months then down-tariff, it costs you £90 more for 600 extra minutes but you get an £ 80 cash back. Do the sums. Additional Cost = £90 Saving = £80 + £34.99. £24.99 saving plus all these extra minutes. Check it out!
Guest MARKUKCOUK Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 im sure you have the best intentions but can i just say... i was offered free insurance for 3/4 months (not sure) and unticked the tick box because i want orange care. so no problems there then (or shouldnt be) technical support? no mention of this so ill be keeping an eye out for it! thanks 4 your comments, although im not panicing yet!
Guest Rob.P Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 Ditto, but now I forewarned I'll be forearmed, dealt with tricky/sneaky direct debits before. Thanks for the info.

Do they not need your Sig on the DD mandate?
Guest mcwarre Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 Do they not need your Sig on the DD mandate? Not necessary nowadays I'm afraid. But they should ask your consent tho'.
Guest summie Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 on any direct debit agreements - there is a clause for immediate recovery in case of disputes - just ensure anything your signing - including the terms and conditions do not include technical support and you should be fine - then -if they later charge you - you can get this money back immediately
Guest MARKUKCOUK Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 the support appears to be connected to the insurance. untick insurance and your fine it seems.
Guest foxy11 Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 all ive been invoiced for is standard insurance, no mention of support. They'll not get their cash if they try that one , so far v happy with their service
Guest chocobogo Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 I ordered mine over the phone and opted for the free 3 months isurance, should I just ring them back and cancel this and go with orange care?? What number do I ring to cancel the insurance??
Guest chocobogo Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 Off Onestop In partnership with Citymain administrators onestopphoneshop offer every customer who does not have inclusive insurance, 3 months free insurance, against theft damage and unauthorised calls. There is nothing to pay up front, if you decide to continue after the 3 months free, you will be charged £4.99 per month. Insurance will only begin when your direct debit has been accepted by your bank, which will be confirmed directly to you. (Most claims carry a £25 excess - three handsets and certain smartphones carry £100 excess) Please note that insurance is presently not available on the Ericsson P900, due to its replacement cost. Your insurance also comes with 10 mins complementary technical support from TMTI (talk me through it). Should you wish to continue this support, £6.99 per quarter will be debited via DD from your bank account. You are covered by the Direct Debit guarantee and can cancel this at any time without effecting your insurance. so looks like if you have taken insurance with them u have options. Either ring them up and cancel insurance & have no insurance. Cancel the insurance and go with Orange Care Wait untill the 3 months are up and then cancel the insurance and go on orange care. I think I am going to go with orange care as orange care is on a 12 month basis it is probably best to stay with orange rather that having a separate direct debit with onestop where they may pull a sly one for the tech support if u forget to cancel!! Just my thought
Guest jason76 Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 also you need to stay on your chosen tarif for 4 months with orange i changed mine 1 day to early last time and got a a bill for £80  silly me..
Guest Honest John Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 The Insurance is NOT with Onestopphoneshop themselves. The paperwork states "if you wish to cancel do so in writing to the address below................" NO TELEPHONE NUMBER GIVEN and customer support will NOT cancel it for you. Same sort of wording on the Technical Support. My main gripe is that I want to be the one to decide what extras to buy. How would you like it if every time you bought a major electrical item, you found that Dixons or Currys had taken out insurance or technical support without you asking for it and then found out that the shop wouldn't cancel it when you called, but that you had to WRITE (at your expense) to a separate sub-company to cancel it and notify your bank just in case too. And the beautiful irony is that the Onestopphone shop sells PHONES - you know the things that enable you to quickly communicate? That's right - the things that helped replace the mail.
Guest MARKUKCOUK Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 john, i cant say for sure, but going on what I'VE seen with the order process.. YOU ARE ASKED ABOUT INSURANCE now i know they are being sly - because the Insurance tick box IS ticked by default when really should you have to choose to get it, not choose to not have it lol. if its the same as my order process, you were asked about it, just not very clearly so my advice to people is this: read each whole page slowly and only then decide if you want to press the ok button!
Guest irnbru Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 I've just e-mailed the Sales Manager a link to this post. Hopefully Onestopphoneshop will clear up any confusion.
Guest Honest John Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 I agree that they mention insurance. They say there is free insurance for the first 3 months. They do NOT mention technical support. Mark mentions tick boxes and reading all pages carefully. I ordered my mobile by phone not by the internet ordering page so there were no boxes and no paper work. The only paperwork was my faxed order that read - and I quote in full - "Confirming order for phone on Orange OVP 400 (O2) plan at £45.00 per month. Please send to me at the address below. Thanks". The purpose of my post was to alert purchasers to the potential Direct Debit set up. If you don't want to have to undo the debits then by reading this thread, you can let them know at order time. Even with the hassle, it's still the best deal going!!!

Guest chocobogo Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 I think I am going to have to wirte to the separate company to cancel the insurance and technical support and inform my bank to withheld any direct debits from them
