Guest Bunchie Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Now that we have two new smartphones on the market and we have had some feedback on how both work I would be interested in seeing which one people are intending to purchase in the near future?
Guest beersoft Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I voted for the moto because the moto might have some of the things i miss from my dumbphone days +2 days standby build quality of a slightly higher standard than the dust trap my E100 is 'vendor' support. accessories might be stocked in a normal orange shop. I don't have the need for bluetooth (my 6310 had it and i never used it in the 12 months i had that phone) camera, I only use the camera to take stupid pictures of me for my IRC chums, and thats not very often. and wm2k3 might come out for it, or there is more chance of the upgrade from moto than HTC. later Owen "help, i think i have mixy"
Guest Pug Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Still wondering which to choose between E200 and 6600.
Guest pradaboy Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I was sure about the E200 before it came out, now due to all the problems my vote is on Moto! I have read very good reviews on the Moto plus the 2002 software is slightly adjusted by Moto to make it more stable. BT is a big loss for me but I can't accept a crappy phone, maybe Moto will have a solution for it. Anyone knows if SDIO works on the Moto?
Guest drblow Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Mmm... still not sure really! For all the problems identified already about the e200, I still much prefer the SPV style than the clam-shell moto - & it don't have OS2003. I would like to think that the bugs in the e200 will be overcome eventually by Modaco genius's - but , that would seem to fly in the face of the evidence from the previous SPV incarnations! Not too sure about P900 - even the name 'symbian' sounds like a caveman would be holding it!! I know its not a smartphone as such, but it does have plenty good features - namely flash capability! I think I'll go to a few stockists & have a good muck around with a variety of phones before I make me mind up.
Guest drblow Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Actually - at this point I'm going to add that after a wee search for forums for other mobile platforms/OS etc. I haven't found anything like Modaco for any of them. Considering that I would have had no fun whatsoever out of my SPV's without the Modaco community, that will actually play a major part in my final decision!! Sounds licky-bum-bum, but it's true!! Then again, if I can find a suitable other forum then, you know, it's been nice chatting with youse all, but ... ;)
Guest Gorskar Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Paul did try a p800 forum, but it didn't take off, so we stuck to what everyone wants - the smartphone forums
Guest morpheus2702 Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I'm waiting to see what appears next year. Currently there are just too many compromises. Specs of my dream phone: Clamshell - just think this is the design of choice for a large screen, colour phone Integrated camera - getting annoyed at missing those 'photo opportunity' moments Bluetooth - didn't used to give two hoots, but with the handsfree legislation and PC uptake of BT, I want it. WM2003 200MHz CPU - I want some raw power under the hood for playing multimedia. Hopefully the MPx220 will be it.
Guest Will Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 moto is leading the upgrade path today.. tomorrow it'll be the e200. if there was a chance of 2k3 on the moto.. i'll jump that way.. otherwise it's htc and the 4way joypad.. Will
Guest mcwarre Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 But is it just about 2K3? I like the moto MPx200 but just adding 2k3 will not do much 4 me I'm afraid. Suppose have to wait for MPx220 (if it comes out) because it will have bluetooth (for use in car and flat as cr*p signal, so have to leave phone on windowsill)
Guest Will Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 2k3 purely because all my work at the moment and the next few months is installing server 2003 and exchange etc, and altho my xda is 2k3, i would like a phone that will take full advantages of the mobile access. Will oh and it also depends if motorola produce a decent car kit
Guest idavid Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 software version throws it for me. think it is pretty silly to buy a new phone with an outdated software version. think how annoyed you are going to get logging on to modaco spotting some nice new software...which you cant use cos its 2003/.NET only  ;) i doubt the moto will get upgraded, it just doesnt make financial sense for orange to bother. so i am going to hold out for the next moto version i think. if i can wait that long... edit - forgot to add that the joystick glitch on the e200 sinks it for me.
Guest yoos Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I was all set ready to throw some cash down on an E200 (or Qtek 8080), but I'm now going to hold off and see if the battery and diagonal joystick issues are fixed... I'm definitely with Morpheus on what I am waiting for in a phone (above and beyond what the original SPV does), but I would add a few things... Here's what I'm waiting for before I dish out more cash... Pretty Stable OS Better battery then the ORIGINAL SPV, even when using bluetooth Integrated camera Bluetooth WM2003 Faster CPU Diagonal joystick capabilities Physically durable and feels well made I'm up for either a clamshell or not, so we'll see who has all of this rolled up into a nice package first... Oh yea... I wouldn't mind having an integrated keyboard or a touch screen
Guest Bunchie Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Interesting views people... I see that quite a few people are waiting for the next generation to emerge and still quite a few people unsure.
Guest glynton Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 I'm gonna wait till the 1.6 update is released then decide. As it stands the E200 has been a dissappointment. I've played with both an XDA 2 and a P900 and i'm very impressed with both. The XDA 2 is a little on the large side though, but i'd keep my SPV for nights out, and have the XDA 2 for university and everything else. the P900 is a little pricey but the current upgrade cost of the E200 also put me off. Shame really.
Guest drblow Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 On a slightly different note - can anyone confirm if homescreen xml editing is the same for the e200 as it was on e100/SPV?? I know there is an issue with installing homescreen cab files, but is it OK for just editing xml files & images, & copying them to the home folder? & what about the new homescreen plugins mentioned?? Anybody tried editing them yet ... midnight??
Guest artax Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Well I bought an e200 which is unfortunately going back as the battery life sucks. I dont care about BT and camera. I'd like a new phone that has better keys than my spv, better screen, is dust free and is faster. The MPX200 seems to fit the bill, ok so no wm2003 but if it eats batteries I dont want it (people are still going to write 2002 software as there's still more of them about). I'm off into town today to have a play and maybe get an upgrade on my spv Dave
Guest McHale Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 I'm waiting for the larger screen. WIth PPC display and SDIO NOW (for wi-fi) I'll be set. Tack on I also NEED: built-in camera faster processor SDIO NOW -Mc p.s. with real SDIO support, wouldn't it make sense to put the SD slot at the top and the IR on the side? Protruding cards (like WiFi and GPS) from the side is pretty bad design. Yah, *THAT* won't break...
