Guest beersoft Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 After watching the debate about the E200 joystick fall apart and turn into a schoolyard scrap. and people blaming everyone for the 'issue' of the 4 way buttons i thought we should have a poll to decide who WE would trust to test the next big thing later Owen "can i have a pint of wine and a glass of stella please"
Guest Will Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 It will be interesting to see if the 4way 'issue' is a bug or a feature.. and if it's not a hardware issue, how soon a patch is issued.. as i'm sure there will be first time users who never realise there 'should' be a better joystick. We await Mr O's comments.. Will
Guest yoos Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Funny.... As of right now the top answer is 'Us lot : well only the ones who can get dressed without assistance :)' It appears this is just what they did.... You are all the testers for this phone, except you had to dish out the money for them... That's just what it seems like anyways in reading all the info I have read... Maybe that's why it doesn't appear to be officially released on O's site (still says comming soon): http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handset...pv_e200/details Maybe they wanted to wait until it was 'tested' by you all, fix the bugs (we hope, but hopefully history doesn't repeat itself), then do an official release...
Guest morpheus2702 Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 This is all such bulls***! OK so we all know that HTC make the SPV - so what?!? Orange brand it, Orange sell it, to the public it is the Orange SPV/E100/E200. You buy an Ipaq and it goes tits up - do Compaq/HP say 'sorry, nothing to do with us, send it to HTC'? (I don't know about now but certainly not 2 years ago). My company buys from the Far East and badges/brands product (electronic accessories). If it's not up to scratch, we can't tell our customers 'sorry, speak to Mr Xu at the XindiBindi Electrical Appliance factory, not our problem'. It's our product and is why we have a huge QA department to make sure what we bring in is up to scratch. The same QA team that Orange should have to ensure that f***-ups like the 4-way joystick don't happen!

(I don't know about now but certainly not 2 years ago). The problem with a one-off signature device is that Orange haven't really done it before with a complicated phone. In my opinion this means that Orange is assuming that a product produced by an unknown manufacturer in Taiwan will be as good (if not better) than a branded product, like a Nokia or Motorola. What they don't seem to have realised is that if they assume this, and don't do the extra required testing and QA, that it severely damages their reputation and abillity to release a signature device in the future. If a Nokia 7250 has a handset-wide flaw, Orange can pass the buck onto Nokia and the press can bitch about Nokia - but your critical journalist isn't going to go out of his way to blame a small company in Taiwan instead of the "manufacturer" Orange. I personally think Microsoft should have a more active role in the testing of the ROMs and handsets. When smaller manufacturers release MS products, they are more likely to sell them as "HTC Microsoft Smartphone" than as "HTC X". People have faith in Microsoft, but this faith is likely to be damaged by HTC's inability to release properly finished phones - you are more likely to perceive a Motorola as a Motorola and an SPV as a Microsoft SP. Both ways Microsoft & Orange lose out 'cos HTC seems to have cocked up...
Guest yoos Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Firaas, Is Orange really the 'manufacturer' though? The reason I ask is because my understanding is that some of the other carriers will be using the same device, just as the E100 (i.e. Qtek).

Orange has been and always will be perceived as the "manufacturer" by the press and by Joe Bloggs whilst they call the phone the Orange SPV.
Guest drblow Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Have to agree wholeheartedly - the phone is branded an Orange phone. At the moment, it seems impossible to even get an e200 on any network other than Orange. Can you imagine the chaos if every product in the world was broken down the way the SPV seems to be - your hoover breaks, but Daewoo won't fix it coz the motor comes from taiwan, & the beltdrive comes from Siberia ... The fact is that Orange appear not to give a s**te about the bugs in the phone, coz the evidence to them is that we (joe public) will buy the new smartphone in huge numbers (coz we're gadget heads) & then spend the next year complaining about it - while they sit laughing all the way to various high street banks, and occassionally make some lame, half-assed remarks about releasing an update - which will probably introduce more bugs to the phone, & won't actually be released until AFTER the new version of the phone is available! Then, next year, we'll all buy the e300 - and the process can begin again!!
Guest morpheus2702 Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 In Orange there is a room... in this room there are doors. One of them leads to The Orange Architect. "Concurrently, the first SPV was perfect. Vis-a-vis it returned to the source and it selected 23 programmers - 7 competent, 16 f***-wits. "
