Motorola mpx220 anytime soon?

I keep hearing bits here and there on this forum about a Motorola mpx220 coming out. Does anyone know roughly if/when this will be available in UK :?:

I'll arranged with Orange to return my E200 tomorrow becuase of a number of reasons including, sound quality, speakerphone being crap and it kept on freezing on homescreen.

I've gone back to using my trusty SPV but am thinking of getting the lovely Moto mpx200. I know this is only running on SM2K2 but if the rumoured mpx220 is in fact true and will come out soon, I might wait for that instead.

Sorry to butt in on your topic Chic0, just wondered what arrangements you need to make for the return of your phone as i too am gonna send my E200 back. I got mine from Onestopphoneshop, do i need to return it to them or can i just take it back to an Orange shop?? Where did you get yours?

I'd like to know about the mpx220 too

i'm starting to go off the idea of the e200 now because of the bluetooth battery usage issue (lets face it, the battery life on the spv/e100 only just borders on usable)

a mpx200 type phone with added wm2003, bluetooth and a camera will without doubt make it the best smartphone available i think

it'll take me a few months to save up for an upgrade anyway, so i might just wait to see what happens ;)

I bought mine by calling 150 last week. I was pissed off with it last night so I called them and explained why I wasn't happy with it. I was then told that a jiffy bag would be sent to me (should arrive tommorow) and I should then just post the phone back to them.

I nthe meantime, they re-activated my old sim so I can carry on using it again in my SPV. When asked if I could just upgrade to Motorola instead, she said that once the E200 has been received back to them and their system ahs been updated with the detaisl, I will be able to upgrade to the mpx200. As long as the jiffy bag arrives tomorrow and I post it back immediately, i reckon I'll be able to upgrade to moto by sometime next week.

I'm not too sure how you'd return stuff to One stopshop. Call them and ask. I know when upgrading through Orange/ Orange shop you get a 7 day return policy if you dont like it.

Hope this helps.

The moto is in stock in some Orange shops. St Annes Sq in Manchester had them last week.

Yes the Motorola MPx200. I saw it with my own two eyes.

I too will be waiting for the Mpx220 - the smaller form factor combined with BT and WM2003 is very desirable. Smartphone platform should overcome my usual concerns with Motorola's inability to come up with a good OS.

Every rumour I have seen points to first half of next year, possibly February. It would be useful to know though: if it will be much later, it would be easy to grab an Mpx 200 now and upgrade again next year. It would be in Motorola's interests to tell us if this is the case (I would buy two of their phones rather than just one).

Until then, trusty SPV... (hopefully new and improved on receipt of 1.6!)

You mean the Mpx200, right? The topic was asking for Mpx220.

Sorry 200 not 220. I didn't even know about the 220!

As an owner of the MPX200 I can honestly say it will fufill all my needs until upgrade time next year! I assume by then the next generation will be out with new Windows Mobile software and all the stuff mentioned and I will definitely snap that one up!

Yep, after seeing the mpx200 in the Orange shop on way to work this morning, I think I'll definately be upgrading to that instead. Only ever had one flip phone before which was the Startac many moons ago when I was a lad :-) Only had it for few weeks though.

In answer to my original question though, does anyone actually know for sure if/when roughly the mpx220 will be released?

I might be wrong here, but I don't think that there has been any confirmation of a release date yet. However I'd read something into the low price of the MPx200 - if they expected this to be unsurpassed for sometime to come then it would probably have been much more expensive.

(However this could just be because it is launching alongside the E200 - although in terms of build quality the MPx200 seems to be the better phone)

As an observer, I've got to point out a couple of things. It seems to me that the MPx200 doesn't have 2003 OS, BT, camera, bells and whistles because it wouldn't work properly. Moto has done a clever thing in producing a dumbed down smartphone that works relatively flawlessly compared to the cutting edge E200.....and because it has the Moto brand, everyone automatically believes it has superior build quality.....it's also built by a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, if you didn't know. It's their first smartphone, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an E200 beater in the form of the MPx220

First, there is no reason it would be able to support 2003, it won't support camera and BT cos it doesn't have the hardware.

Second, I don't think people are assuming better build quality because of the brand, I think people have found issues with the quality of the e200 and all reports I've heard from people who have the MPx200 have suggested that it has a battery that lasts about 3 days and the audio quality is good.

I must admit I wasnt too impressed with the overall feel of the e200. To me it felt really cheap.

You are right, spacemonkey, but what I meant is that this is a first attempt at a smartphone by the ODM (not Moto).....and I've heard that they didn't add the 2003 OS, BT and a camera etc because it is notoriously difficult to integrate them, to prevent glitches and to make the battery last more than a day.

The Dopod 515 has 03OS and it's a Canary with no camera or BT.....surely 03 is a better platform than 02 (.net, etc) and in my very limited understanding, not just about camera and BT support. I will concede though that 03OS has Chinese language support which is perhaps the main reason for it being on the Dopod. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

I think it is very smart of Moto to promote dumbed down version that is relatively glitch free and has a battery that lasts ( - because there ain't much to drain it). Moto will surely not allow any update (the 220) unless it does meet exacting specifications....and I think it may be some time in coming.

There's no excuse for the speaker quality on the E200 though....

By the way, in all seriousness, I want to thank all the posters here....I am learning a lot......cheers!

I doubt the mere presence of bluetooth and camera would actually limit battery life if correctly implemented (i.e. automatic bluetooth on when incoming call, off again when hang up + and no power to camera until activated). I think it just comes down to writing effective power management software, which Moto have done by the sounds of it (SPV/E100 last about 1 day, MPx200 about 3 from reports I've heard).

I may be wrong but I don't think Mobile 03 has changed so much that these power management techniques will be useless, so it will only have to deal with the integration of bluetooth and camera rather than starting again from scratch which is why I think we are likely to see the MPx220 around first quarter - btw has their been any official acknowledgement of the MPx220.

I've not seen any official announcement of MPx220 only rumours. Also, based on what I've seen in the past, it seems that it takes 2 - 3 months between the official announcement and actual availability of the handset (sometimes even longer than that). I wouldn't be surprised if the 220 wasn't out 'til March if not later.

Rumoured February end of March - the MPx200 has got to have some sort of shelf life. Contrary to speculation, is it possible it will actually have WM2k3 :?: I mean, Orange were the only official representation of 2002 and Microsoft have now given that a free license which is why Moto have picked it up one year later on. Will this not be the same case for WM2k3 :?: If true then the 220' couldnt possibly have independant bluetooth support nor an integrated camera which goes to show that its a figment of someones imagination  :?:

And it is supposed to support EDGE (not that we'll be able to use it in the UK).

I have read elsewhere that moto may provide an 2003 upgrade for the mpx200 (don't really know if it was on msmobiles - not exactly top news all the time?!) as I don't see why it wouldn't run. The mpx200 is surely capable, much more I believe than the e200 ever was (compared with it's processing power).

Agreed, a mpx220 may not become an e200 killer, as I may also show some similar bugs if bluetooth and a bigger TFT (FTD maybe?) screen is utilized. However, with moto behind that kind of phone I can only believe it will be of a much better quality, than the piece of crap (pardon my language) the e200 has turned out to be.

My opinion anyway...

I have sadly returned my e200, as I found it useless although it has a lot of features (and even more bugs  ). I am waiting to recieve a mpx200, and will look at the mpx220 and mio 8390 when they arrive next year as a replacement. However, I don't really find the need for a camera, nor bluetooth, but ofcourse it is nice to have.

My guess is february/march next year. But I don't think there is anything official yet (not to forget what the topic was all about  )
