Guest Jim911 Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 I just bought an AT&T MPx200 and when I boot ... it says Smartphone 2002 ... I thougt I saw Smartphone Version 2003 on a Microsoft Web Site ... Is there a 2003 Version ??? And if so ... can I upgrade it on my MPx200 ????
Guest nCoder Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Originally it was going to include Windows Mobile 2003 (basically the new version of the SmartPhone operating system), but instead Motorola decided to use a stable version of the 2002 OS. Theoretically an update could be offered at some point in the future, however I wouldn't hold your breath
Guest mattat Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 It seems that Motorola are going to release an upgraded version of the phone in the form of the MPx220 at some point next year. I suppose it's possible that they could then release an upgrade for MPx200 users, but surely the MPx200 couldn't take advantage of bluetooth and camera functions without hardware upgrades
Guest dom Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 I half wonder whether the hardware for it is actually there and is just not accessible because it is running sp2k2. Moto did a similar thing with the A920 on 3 (for different reasons) where the bluetooth was disabled, but the a925 which apparently has identical hardware has bluetooth enabled (people even loaded the a925 firmware onto their a920's and got BT working). Even if there is no BT, it would still be a worthy upgrade since the 2003 OS is meant to be faster and has .net support (2003 is based on WinCE 4.0 instead of 3.0).
Guest mattat Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 It's certainly possible - I think originally Smartphone 2002 was meant to have bluetooth on board but they messed up the timings of the processors or something like that - I'm not too sure on the details, but it was something about the GSM stack processing conflicting with the actual computing processing, so I guess they could have built bluetooth into the designs and its only when 2003 is installed that it will be able to use it. However there wouldn't be an integrated camera (is there an external camera available for the MPx200?) but that wouldn't be a concern for a lot of people. I'm not sure the speed boost of WM2003 would be that great - wasn't the speed boost on the E200 mainly down to the increased RAM, which the MPx200 already has.
