Guest mojo Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Hi guys, had my mpx200 for a week now and I am getting about 20 hours standby with minimal use of the phone. Obviously its a bit dissapointing, is this normal or do i have a defective phone/battery? I have not left the phone connected to an unpowered usb connection so it is not discharging. Your comments would be very much appreciated.
Guest Simon Desser Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Probably not what you wanted to hear, but here goes. I've found the battery life to be outstanding (compared to any variant of SPV) After light use, (a few short calls and a few minutes of music and games) 49 hours later, and the battery's on 60%
Guest danhs Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 I've been getting around the 20 hour mark but thats with a lot of messenger and tennis playing
Guest alphaflux Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 The quoted specifications are 310 hours standby time, and approximately 5 hours talk time. I would say these are a little optimistic to say the least, but generally you should expect the phone to last at least 50 hours with minimal usage before a charge is required. The determining factors are of course the length of time before the backlight and display are turned off, length of time playing games and the use of anything that uses the radio capabilities of the phone (talk, SMS, GPRS etc). From the motorola site "As the phone drains the battery during a call, the talk time left in the battery is diminished until the phone is turned off or the battery recharged. The longer the talk time the less frequently you will need to recharge."
Guest fleggsy Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 just read a review spotted by CoolSmartPhone on vnunet qouting five days standby - "Motorola has managed to up the ante on smartphone battery life and quotes five days of standby time and five hours of talk. This is in line with ordinary mobiles. " http://www.vnunet.com/Products/Hardware/1150620 if you're interested. Have just managed to reserve mine today in Greenwich which I shall be eagerly picking up this afternoon. Can't wait.
Guest Emad Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Also depends if you keep it closed and what apps you have in teh background. And how long your initial charge was as that affects the capacity.
Guest Bunchie Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Hmm my battery seems pretty wierd really. It makes 24 hours easily and says that it has about 40% left. But then this 40% literally drains away in like half an hour. It seems the last third of my battery just literally disappears. Its not much of a problem really but a bit annoying
Guest Shuflie Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Anyone having battery problems try the old SPV charging trick. Run your phone battery down and switch it off, then leave on charge overnight.
Guest stu_lowe2003 Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 I fully charged all of my smartphones and then left them running without charge for a full day and night. In the morning this was the result: MPX200 : Main batttery at 67% Treo 600: Battery at 91% SPV : Battery had 1 bar left E200: DEAD, flat battery What do the SPV series do that other phones don't when they are idle? But very pleasing news on the MPX200, shows its not the OS. Stu
Guest mojo Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Thanks for all your replies, as already mentioned i was dissapointed with my standby time, 20 hours after answering a couple of short calls. This morning I uninstalled the caller ID app and i also inserted my original spv 8mb card (in response to a previous post). I've had the phone on now for 13 hours and i've made and recieved a few calls and i'm pleased to share with you all that my battery life seems to have improved significantly. Battery indicator is showing 91%!!! I am thinking that it was perhaps the caller ID app that was causing the short standy times simply because i presume its 'always on' and therefore uses more processing therefore runs down the battery faster. I am no expert and i could be wrong but maybe those people who have suffered unacceptable battery pereformance could give it a try it seems to have worked for me. I don't think the SD card has anything to do with it. In theory it shouldn't. I will reinsert my other SD card after my next charge and see if it affects battery performance, of course i will post any significant findings. thanx again
Guest Shuflie Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 The callerid app was the first thing to get taken off my new MPx200. What is the point of it with a flip phone anyhow? Its not as if you can look at the picture before answering a call (unless you turn the answer on flip off, and why would you do that?) and when talking to someone I normallly have the phone held to my ear.
Guest cyrilthefish Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Most odd, i was looking at the motorola site and i'm really wondering how the mpx200 has such a better battery life than SPV's: SPV/e100/e200= 1000mah Li-ion battery MPx200= 860mah Li-ion battery somehow it manages to do much better on a lower capacity battery!
Guest Emad Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Because the main screen is on less.
Guest andysalmon Posted November 30, 2003 Report Posted November 30, 2003 The mention about the apps running is absolutely correct. I have twice in 2 days left a game running in the background and then was surprised to find the MPx dead after 3 hours- until I sussed it out of course! Now I use the tweak from Midnight to put the Task Manager on the menu bar. Here's the link: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...ight=reg+editor Sorted!!
Guest Emad Posted November 30, 2003 Report Posted November 30, 2003 My phone charged from 60% to nothing in 4 hours when I was at dinner on friday - removed the caller id and now it doesn't seem to do this any more. Weird. Bug in teh app? Why do I always write teh?
Guest alphaflux Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 One thing I have noticed is that SD card access pulls more power than that of acessing the integrated flash memory; fairly obvious when you think about it. With applications that run constantly in the background, such as caller ID, access to the SD card is quite frequent. I no longer use caller ID, as you say its pretty useless with flip phone answer, but anyone interesting in running this application should try installing it on the integrated flash memory. On my phone at least this certainly extended the battery life by a fair bit.
Guest roboreeves Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 What would I do without forums. I was getting 6 hours from a full charge doing almost nothing with it! I removed caller ID app last night and at 11.00pm tonight after a full day at work, diary use and about 20 to 25 mins of calls and I still have 81% main battery!! wow Thank you one and all. Is there any way to make this bit of info ant easier to find? I thought this would be big news, even using the search facility took ages to find.

I just saw this thread too... should have tried this on the e200 I returned (for other reasons though... the buzz was horrible). Anyway, nice to know when I get my moto next week. Weeee...
Guest JOEJOETHEJOEY Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 I charged mine for just over 12 hours when I first got it (8th Jan 2004), used it to make 3 calls since (being a second phone) and some text messaging, watched a few TV episodes on it and been playing around with settings etc, it's now 11th Jan 2004 (1:15am) and it's still showing: Main Battery 41% Backup Battery 90% I'm very suprised it's lasted so long. Oops, maybe I spoke too soon, it just dropped to 31% and beeped to tell me to charge it. :D Well, it's been good enough. :)
