Guest MaximilianWeisheit Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 HI, I got the SPV for a long time now, but I was wondering if I really need GPRS service for my phone to send MMS to other cell users. I am located in New York, USA and have a plan with T-Mobile. - My current plan does not include GPRS with is 10 dollar more for like 10mb transfer each month. - well I dont wont to pay 10 bucks because I dont use it that much Well anyway I wondered if i really need the GPRS plan because other people use there sony erricons or nokia cellphone and send MMS like crazy with no GPRS plan. I guess it goes over the normal SMS service. Everytime I am trying to send an MMS it tries to connect to GPRS and it does not work of cause because I am not signed up for it. Any suggestions? Thanks, Max
Guest shadamehr Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 This query takes me back a long time... To when my g/f could not have GPRS activated on her O2 UK Online account, without changing to one of their newer tariffs. A step she didn't want to do as at that point, back in the early days of that network, she really WAS getting UNLIMITED free SMS each month. Thus upgrading to a gprs tariff meant accepting a newer allocation of limited SMS (and she was sending 5000 a month - yes 5000 - back then). So I turned to a web site whose name I forget, [scrap that - it was nowsms, at - http://www.nowsms.com ] that worked as a kind of carrier service. [its changed a lot now, and I'm not sure it serves the same purpose anymore...] It allowed you to recieve MMS over your phone via standard CSD (in other words, without using GPRS). It turned out however, that the handsets themselves, have to be designed to permit MMS over CSD, and what we found way bac then, was that all Nokias at that time, such as the then 7210, did NOT permit MMS over CSD, but ONLY by GPRS. This was a Manufacturer choice, I must repeat. So, in asnwer perhaps to your post, I was told way back, that MMS over CSD IS POSSIBLE... But that it rewuires support within the mobile handset to allow it. And I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what handsets, and even manufactures, do allow this. I could only offer that sadly, in the fullness of time since then, chances are LESS likely, not more, that support has been withdrawn for CSD MMS, given the wider rollout of GPRS... I hope I've gave you some help nevertheless... Failing that, do a Google on "MMS over CSD" - it turned out LOADS of hits for me...
Guest martin Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Max It's possible for MMS to be transmitted over the GSM network but it's success depends on whether T-mobile has setup a GSM MMS service. I suppose you could always try setting it up and see what happens. Programs - Settings - Data connections Menu - Edit connections - Dial-up Connections Ceate a GSM connection for MMS. Menu-Add Description: T-zones CSD Connects to: MMS connection Country code: 1 Area code : 913 Phone number: 2440821 User name: wap (or try blank) Password: (blank) Programs - Accessories - MMS setup First field: T-zones CSD IP: 10.168.200.50 Port: 9201 (or try 9203) Mmsc address: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms When you send an MMS you should get the 2 arrows (in top right) instead of the G symbol.
Guest MaximilianWeisheit Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 hi Thanks for replying! I tried what you said but came about some problems! First with setting up! I could not select MMS Connection in the connects to: field. There was only Orange MMS, Wap network, my corporate network, the internet. I tried Orange MMS. andset up the rest. then tried to send a message but It would not let me , I tried but still hat the little G in theupper right corner. - then it came back with a failure message, "could not send message" any suggestions Max
Guest martin Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Yeah it's called Orange MMS on the SPV and MMS connection on all other Tanagers but they are the same thing  After the T-zones MMS dial-up is created (with points to Orange MMS) and the MMS setup is created against that T-zones MMS connection it should dial-up with the 2 arrows . I have tried it on my SPV and it dials-up OK although my service provider does not support GSM MMS ;) The connection data in the registry which may not reflecting what you see in the settings menu. I would try deleting all existing data connections (CSD&GPPRS&Proxy) and then re-create and test the MMS dialup only. After the MMS is tested then add the GPRS connections again.
