Basic Help needed please

Sorry to all for this cross post  But I got the memory chip today and thought it would solve everything and I would have files and everything up and running :? Now I find I'm even more lost, and am desparate  So am looking for any help I can get :D Thanks - and sorry again to anyone who has read this on the other MPx200 forum.

I have a few (very) basic questions I’d like some help with if anyone can spare a minute or two :)

First – How do I convert an existing (on PC) word, jpeg or other file to .cab format to put on the Mpx200?

Do I need ClearVue to read the files (if I can get them on)

How do I tell if the phone is “locked” – and what does that mean in terms of what I can put on it (its on Orange) or run? If it’s not locked – is that a problem? I like the look of Smart Explorer program – it seem to be just what I need (if I can get the files I want on the MPx200!!)

We have a memory chip of 256mg – how do I use it? (I know this may sound completely daft – but I just don’t know how to get files on to it!)

Flash (don’t know what that is either!!) is at internal is 3.9% used, but is showing 38% left – again don’t understand this (or what it means).

Finally – Outlook is huge (over 900 contacts) and the phone memory is right down (76% used) – can I move Outlook to the memory chip?

As you probably guessed this is my first smart phone and I’m lost!!

Thanks in advance if anyone can help

Ok first of all, have you used the cable that came with the phone to sync to your PC ? If not you need to install some software onto your computer called active sync. It should come on the cd. If you have done this, then you should be able to use the "explore" button to look at the files on your device and to copy them over.

If you want to copy a jpg over to use as a homescreen background its needs to be 176 pixels wide by 200 tall (180 if you exclude the "icon" bar). you need to out the image in ipsmapplication datahome. To select the image, you need to click the "programs button and find settings, click that and choose homescreen, then scroll down to background image and you should see the images name in the list.

If you want to view word documents you will need the software that you mentioed as there is no native word viewer on the smartphone.

Your phone is deemed to be locked if you cannot install "unsigned" software on it. Most software avaialbe from handango is signed www.handango.com but you can unlock your phone by following the instructions on this forum, but you might be better to wait for the OTA from http://www.developers.orange.com/WorkingWi.../SPV/Unlocking/ if you are not familiar with the phone. In the mean time you might not be able to install some software but sites tend to indicate whether the code is signed or not.

smart explorer is signed software so yo would be able to install that, you don't need it to copy files over, but it is handy as it allows you to explore the files on your phone without having to use active sync.

When you say memory chip, do you mean a pc memory chip (describe it appearance) you need whats called an SD card or an MMC these are different from memory chips. The cards are about 2cm by 3cm and they fit in a slot (it may well have a piece of plastic in it currently, when you press the plastic in it should come out. That is where the SD or MMS card goes, if you have a card in your phone and you are connected via active sync you will be albe to see the card as storage card this lets you put your files on to the storage card.

Outlook is huge, do you need all 900 contacts ? You could delete some or move them onto your sim (perhaps those you don't use so often). I don't know if yo can copy contacts to the storage card, mines never got so big but I hope this helps you.

HI – and thanks for reply :D

Yes the MPx is “sync’ed” (is that a word! :? ) – it’s the copying over bit that’s lost me – the Orange hand book is not so helpful and I’m not sure at all how to convert a regular windows file into a .cab file.

The jpeg files I want to put on the MPx are made in Windows Office Document Viewer – these are client letters scanned in to the Viewer and stored as “work files”. Does this make a difference?

I’ll get the software previously mentioned – thanks. :D

I’ll check out the site you mention and see what’s available. And check the signed/not signed position – presume if it doesn’t say, then its probably not? :?:

Really glad the Smart Explorer is ok – think that will help when I understand this phone better!! :)

It’s a SD card (definitely) – sorry to be unclear on this. But when I look in storage card its empty – nothing.

:?

It’s a business outlook – so yes – all the contacts are needed (well just deleted 30!) so if I can get it on to the SD card it would help!

Thanks again

Hello Liz!

Now, I don't have a motorola mpx - I have an e100, but I gather that they are pretty much the same - so, first of all, not every file you copy to the phone needs to be a .cab file - if that's what you mean!!

You can just copy a jpg into your 'my documents' folder, by opening your 'sync' on your PC desktop, click on explore to open your phone files, & then click into the folder you want (on the SPV, it's IPSM/My documents). When you drag the file you want into the phone folder, the sync program should convert it to your phone automatically - at least, that's what happens with activesync on the SPV!! I;m not sure about the microsoft office viewer (never used it) but if it is just creating jpg files, then they should copy over no problem.

EDIT - I've just noticed you mentioned your phone was quite full, so - to use the SD card just open activesync, & when you open the phone there should be a folder called "storage card". Just make a new folder inside that, & copy your images in there. You can then use the file explorer to find & open them.

However, when you click the file, it will open in internet explorer - which will show the images quite small (the pixel size is 176 wide x 200 long). You can click options in internet explorer & in general, untick "fit to screen". That will show the pictures in full size, but you'll have to scroll around alot to see anything. So, if you are copying documents which are large, you might need some kind of document viewer application - there are several for sale from handango as statscat pointed out!

I could be completely wrong about all of that, by the way, coz, like I said, I don't have a motorola, & I don't think I've ever even seen one in real life! :D

As for the whole locking scenario - you phone is "locked" to installing software which does not have the proper certification (basically meaning that all software you pay for has got the correct certificate, free stuff generally doesn't!).

I'm sure that there was a post recently about an application you can download which will unlock your phone (yep! -click here) but you only really need to do this if you intend downloading free programs/games/homescreens etc. But there is certainly no harm in doing it, coz there is always stuff being developed as free/shareware, which will require an unlocked phone, & you might need some of it one day!! Like the file explorer app!! Although, if you don't want to unlock your phone, there are similar file explorer programs available to buy.

Don't worry - you have come to the right place to get all the reliable info you need about your phone! Although, obviously not from me!

Oh, & if all of that turn out to be a load of arse, the let us know & maybe somebody that knows stuff can help! Like statscat - she knows stuff ... :)

welcome to the site Liz

To expand on this, first of all it is important to install Activsync before plugging the phone into the PC otherwise you may have problems with the phone being seen by the PC.

smart Explorer is NOT signed but is the best explorer application around.

If you follow the very simple Decert (application unlock) instructions in drblow's link then you will be able to install it without a problem.

Nope you can copy the name and number but not the contacts as you normally see them.

Finaly this is just a quick visit but anymore questions just ask here :D

Thanks for the welcome and replies; have got active sync working all OK – (and learnt NOT to have the phone in the cradle with I start the computer!)

”Smart Explorer is NOT signed but is the best explorer application around.

I had a look at the unlock link but am not too sure what the implications of unlocking the phone? :? Does it just mean that I have to be very careful on what I download? Won’t be having games on it – just business apps. So that should be OK? :?

The phone is working fine with the large contacts at the moment, and providing I can put new programs (like smart explorer) on to the SD card It should be OK. I though the phone wasn’t recognising the card because there is nothing shown in the storage folder – never thought to make a folder in there! Dherr!

Problem with putting less used names and number on the sim and deleting the contact is that I would lose the contact on the computer when it sync’s – I think?

Thanks again for your help – I’ll have a play about and let you know how I go on.

Don't worry about unlocking - pretty much everybody here has unlocked their phones, so it doesn't cause any problems at all. If you are only ever going to use business applications (which you will probably have to pay for!) then they will not require an unlocked phone.

If you want to install the file explorer (which IS the best one available) you will need to unlock the phone - but with the application at the link I posted above, it should be easy as pie!!

Hi again

Made the folder and transferred a file over to the phone – but couldn’t open it! :)

Just discovered the Office image files are in TIFF format, not Jpeg.

Anyone know if there is a TIFF viewer available? (the ClearVue one only handles Jpeg) Or if I can convert the files I need to Jpeg?

Think I will go for the unlock after I get used to the phone - and what I'm doing with it.

Thank for any help (again!) :D

You could check to see if the viewer program will let you export the files as any other format - or you could try converting them on your PC before you put them in the phone. I don't know of any applications for the phone which let you view .tiff (although, there may be one!)

You could try to use a PC file converter - try a google search for ABC Amber Image Converter 1/07. I have used it before just to convert files from one format to another - it's simple & works well.

Something like this will let you convert the files to jpg, & then put them on your phone! If you can't find it, PM me & I can try to get it for you!

Hi

Well - the viewer let me open and save the file in either Paint (bmap – massive files, just one was over 4MB!) or Photo Viewer - Jpg, about 680kb. :D

I activated sync and navigated on the PC to Storage Card (and the new files fold I remembered to make! ) and dragged the file over (the jpg one) all seemed to go well, :) and the file appeared in the right place on the SD card – but the icon on the phone file had reverted to “image viewer”. :D

Then I uncoupled the phone from the docking bay and looked for the file to see if it would open anyway and – couldn’t find it!!

Any ideas how to get to the files on the SD card? :?

I’m going crazy with this because I know when I find out how this all works I’m going to feel stupid  – I’m obviously missing something very basic along the way. Maybe I need to unlock, and then download the explorer program first? :?:

The “My Documents” folder seems to be on the phone memory – anyone know if I can drag this to the SD Card? Or if I need to :?: - to get at the files?

Thanks again folks! When I finally get to grips with all this I’ll try to help out in return.

Love – a baffled

Ok Liz - deep breaths, re-centre your chakras!

It sounds like you have activesync working, but did the PC give you a message saying somehting like "converting to smartphone format" when you drag the files into the folder?

How did you look for the file on the phone without the file explorer? The only way to find files on the phone is with some kind of file explorer - is there one inculded on the mpx200? Can you tell me what program you used, & what you did?

The 'my documents' folder is on the phone memory - but you can create as many folders as you like in the SD card & copy stuff into it the same way, so you don't need to worry about the my documents folder on the phone.

Don't worry - this isn't a big problem, we just need to iron out a few details!! The problem may still be the file format - I never heard of photo viewer jpg - but I think a jpg is a jpg in anybody's language!

I definately think you shgould unlock your phone & install the file explorer - if the files are being transfered into your phine correctly, then it will definately find them.

Let us know how you get on. I'm sure we can sort this out in a jiffy!

Hi

Charkas formally centred and spinning nice and regular!

“It sounds like you have activesync working, but did the PC give you a message saying somehting like "converting to smartphone format" when you drag the files into the folder?”

Yes it did – and I got the progress bar followed by “done” (or something like)

”How did you look for the file on the phone without the file explorer? The only way to find files on the phone is with some kind of file explorer - is there one inculded on the mpx200? Can you tell me what program you used, & what you did?”

Ahrr - now – that’s where madness set in! :x I searched and searched and found - nothing, no possible way of finding the file I’d just transferred. :? So I docked back into the “mothership” and found the file on windows explorer. But it wouldn’t open.

”The 'my documents' folder is on the phone memory - but you can create as many folders as you like in the SD card & copy stuff into it the same way, so you don't need to worry about the my documents folder on the phone.”

I wondered if I could just make a new one then thought it may cause a conflict. Thanks

”I definately think you shgould unlock your phone & install the file explorer - if the files are being transfered into your phine correctly, then it will definately find them”.

I think your right. I got my own MPx today :D (the one I’ve been trying to sort out is husbands) so can get moving on experimenting and downloading on mine and follow through on his when I’m sure how to do it!

”Let us know how you get on. I'm sure we can sort this out in a jiffy! “

Will do! Starting with the unlocking!! :!: Scary :) :!:

PS to last message:

Where do I save the unlock and smart explorer files? The mothership (PC) the phone or the SD Card? :?

Thanks again

download the alphaflux unlock cab and Smart Explorer cab to your PC.

drag and drop them across to the following folder on your phone when your phone is connected to active synch: ipsm/windows/start menu

The easiest option is to then switch your phone off and back on.

On the phone then go to programs menu and you will find both items listed.

Install the unlock cab first by pressing enter when highlighted on the programs menu.

Then do the same for the Smart Exploerer cab.

Hope this helps,

davy.

OK Liz - we're winning!!

You are onviously copying the files to the phone successfully. The reason you cant find them is because the smartphone does not come with a pre-installed file explorer. That's why you will need to install the file explorer program before you can see any files.

So ... first of all you will have to unlock the phone. I haven't done this, but it would seem that all you do is download the unlock .cab file - copy it to your phone using activesync to your start menu (I dunno what that is on the motorola, but on the SPV its IPSMWindowsStart Menu). You can then go into the phone menu, & the cab file should appear there with the other programs. Just click on it & it will install to your phone & you should then be unlocked!!

(This may all be different on the motorola, I dunno! If anybody does, please feel free to correct me!)

Then, repeat that process with the fileexplorer .cab - and you should have the explorer installed & I reckon you will then at least be able to view the files in the way I described above (using internet explorer).

I hope that makes sense! If not, then let us know!

OK??

Yahoo :!: – We have lift off :!:

Moby Moto is unlocked – Smart Explorer is working - and I just transferred an experimental jpeg (jpg?) file over to my new - My Documents – Job Files - folder on the SD. :D :)

Whippee :!: =D> =D>

Now I just need a way to read the document – (the scanned in letter is too small - as expected ) and zoom only zooms to the middle of the doc with no navigation. Who cares! I’m sure I can sort that with a “reader” program - or IR print out if needed.

Thank you, thank you for all the help on this!

Me an’ Moto are off cruising to find a reader program!

Thanks again – I really can’t tell you how much you have helped with this, its all so clear now! #-o

Good stuff Liz - I was rooting for you the whole time!

As for viewing the document, you might need another program, but did you try doing what I said in internet explorer - go to options, general, & unclick 'fit page to screen' (or something to that effect)?

Glad you got it going - welcome to the wonderful world of owning a smartphone ... you wanna do something, you go to modaco to find out how!! Oh yeah, that & bang your head off it a couple of times!! & I'm sure I've heard lucky pants being mentioned in some equasion somewhere ... :D
