E200 Unlocking/Bluetooth & IrDA/GPRS charges questions

Ok, this is kind of a tripple barreled post, just to save time and space.

anyway, first thing. I went to the Orange developer site to try and unlock my E200, and although someone else has posted on here that the unlock will work with the E200, Orange state on the developer site that it does not support the E200 and that they are working on an unlocking method for it. So, will it work it won't it? Also, I intended to unlock it for application instalation purposes, not development, so would Orange be able to figure this out in any way and re-lock my phone?

Secondly, are there any programs (signed or un-signed) that will allow me to send images, midi's and various other things through Bluetooth and/or Infrared to another phone (not another Smartphone). I can recieve them, as my friend sends me stuff from his T610 all the time and they work fine, it's just a case of I can't send him stuff and it's pretty annoying for something that expensive and complex :?

And finally, I signed up for Orange's promotional offer of free 'Orange World Access 3' for a month, then £4 a month thereafter, which I was all for, but I got my bill through and for a couple of days usage I got about £3.50 for GPRS. Now, they tried to explain this to me, but I might need it in English, not Orange  As far as i've ever been aware (I've been working in a high street mobile phone retail store for the past 18 months, so this is a little embaresing..) WAP is charged per minute and GPRS is charges per MB and thats that. But then they told me that the bundle I had entitled me to free GPRS over WAP, not GPRS, which then confused the hell out of me. I never knew you could use GPRS over WAP. Could someone please explain to me how this is charged and how exactly it works, bearing in mind GPRS over WAP is totally new to me. The funny thing is, the bundle states that I get 3MB of data or 4 hours of CSD a month free, so how does that link to the GPRS over WAP?

Any help is much appricated, I really need to sort all this stuff out so I can just get on and use it :D

Yes it does and need unlocking for some reg things I think

so would Orange be able to figure this out in any way and re-lock my phone?

I dont think they care

Secondly, are there any programs (signed or un-signed) that will allow me to send images, midi's and various other things through Bluetooth and/or Infrared to another phone (not another Smartphone).

hi the gprs deal u are on is for wap over gprs only

you need to change your data settings to connect via orange wap to take advantage of this offer,,its a confusing deal and orange have (in my opinion) deliberatley conned people with this..you can not use this for connecting to the internet via pocket ie or you will be charged for your gprs usage..you will also be charged for msn and any thing else that connects to the internet,so the deal that they have given you is pretty useless for the spv and is only really any use on a phone that doesnt have full internet access,,if you plan on using internet explorer on your phone then you need to arrange a gprs bundle with orange to avoid nasty phone bills

i know this is confusing and orange caught me out with the same deal..

so heres how it works (as far as i can remember) any 1 with more idea feel free to correct me

most phones even though they have gprs only connect via wap over gprs (because they dont have full internet access like the spv) so this deal was aimed at them..and although the spv does have wap,,when you connect to the internet via the built in internet explorer it does not use wap to connect but just directly uses gprs so you will incurr charges for this

(im not really sure how to explain it because im still sort off confused by it all myself exept to say i cancelled the deal and swapped it for a gprs bundle (orange can do this for you over the phone just dial 150 from your phone) and the gprs bundles give you FULL internett access with an agreed amount of data transfer allowed with the bundle :!: the bundle i am on is £8 for 7mb and £2 for every mb over the 7mb but this is for full internett access whereass the deal you are on is for wap over gprs only :!: :!:

ok im gonna stop now as im really starting to confuse myself..sorry if i have confused you even more than you already where :D :)

Unlocking it is fine, as I did exactly that the day I got it, and it works fine now. I needed to do this to allow some apps to run, such as the ClearType tweak. Apparently anything that impacts on the Registery will not work unless the phone is unlocked.

As for programs to send images etc by Bluetooth - believe me mate - the Orange SPV die hards on here can argue the point til they are blue in the face with me - I simply couldn't believe when my E200 arrived, that it couldn't do this out of the box. Didn't the fact that they designed it to ACCEPT them, and also be able to beam by BT a Business Card, ring any alarm bells with Orange/HTC. I'm flabbergasted too mate. All I have been told is the same as you though mate - that an App. will be written for it soon to allow it. Just been playing with our lass's N-Gage before there, and this is allowable at an O.S. level, let alone existing third party software such as Psiloc Explorer - and this goes back as far ago as the 7650, which is getting on for nearly a year and a half/two years old.

And to think, I left Nokia 'cos I thought they were getting poor, yet nearly two years on from Nokia's 7650, Orange/HTC/MS still haven't thought to allow BT sending of images... That's staggering.

Finally, as for the issue of the GPRS charges... Mmmm I have a strange bill in too, but I'm gonna ring them tomorrow.

Worryingly, there is something about what Tangerdave says, that has my alarm bells ringing.

BUT, it will be an interesting argument I have with Orange then, 'cos I just looked on their web again at the Orange World Offer, and it mentions amongst other things:

"As long as you have a wap or web phone you can read the latest headlines, play games, read your email, send video clips and do much more."

Note the specific reference to WEB phone, as opposed to just a WAP phone.

But most relevantly, it further talks about:

"1 megabyte is equivalent to approx 1200 wap pages or 20 web pages, 100 emails without attachments"

So why would they talk about it applying to WEB phones, being for checking your Email, and then above all else, then explain how this will equate to around 20 WEB pages, if it is for WAP only...?

It should be an interesting conversation I have with them methinks, if they claim this too.

It CAN'T be just GPRS allowance for WAP pages, when they say it is for your WEB phone too, and for so many WEB pages...

Don't you agree TanagerDave???

thanks for your help guys.

The thing is, once I get my application sent off to Orange, I'll be getting a staff discount on the tariff of 40% (!) and I'll get Orange World Access free for a year! Plus, I don't mind not using my phone for looking at full Internet pages, I'm content with just WAP and Orange World pages really. I can use my PC when I get home for the real 'net without having to worry about charges

So, I know this is a bit tricky (i've had a look and I'm still not sure) but which settings do I have to alter in my phones connection settings in order to get it to take advantage of the offer? I'm only going to surf wap pages anyway. I only ever use it for checking news, weather, cinema listings and various other little bits that wap pages can provide :D

This was discussed previously and it was concluded that the Orange World packs includes all internet services (web browsing, file downloads, email, etc.)

See this topic for more info http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...6454&highlight=

So I'm not sure why you have been charged £3.50 for GPRS and I would go back to Orange and inquire further.

BTW Orange world on the SPV can only be accessed using the Internet connection (APN orangeinternet)

WAP is charged per minute and GPRS is charges per MB and thats that. But then they told me that the bundle I had entitled me to free GPRS over WAP, not GPRS,

With a GSM (Circuit Switched Data) connection you are charged for the duration of the call and with a GPRS (Packet Switched Data) connection charges for the quantity of data transfered.

The phone contains Internet software for browsing HTML pages and WAP software for browsing WML pages. The Internet and WAP software can use either a GSM or GPRS data connection (or any other data connection for that matter. ie. pass through)

I've accessed WAP through the orangeWAP APN on my E200 but it's deathly slow and in my opinion a waste of time.

I've phoned customer care about this issue too because it rings the old alarm bells. I asked them before I signed up because I couldn't be sure from their description. They've told me that it includes all GPRS so if they try to charge me they'll get told what to do in no uncertain terms.

I've got the name of the guy I spoke to on 150 as a reference in case they do try it on. I'd recommend everyone to do the same just in case ;-)
