Guest FrankyG Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 At the moment, there is; IA_CID_StartUp.exe MMSNotification MMSRegister NewCont Orange Support RemoteNotify Anyone removed any or all of the above without adverse effects?T9.CAB
Guest alphaflux Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Well, with the exception of IA_CID_Startup, which can be removed quite safely, they are all pretty much required. You want more! Ok then, here goes ... First for the mystery item. I have been so far unable to work out exactly what newcont.exe does. It seems to be part of the core OS environment and as such is not even visible in a directory structure listing (such as wceload.exe etc). You may be able to remove it, but I am not really sure as I haven't tried. My phone has been destroyed and re-built soooo many time lately, it needs a rest. Rmove it at your own risk, but if you do, let me know how it goes ! IA_CID_Startup is the Caller ID background process. Your phone will function perfectly normally without it ... but Caller ID will not. If you don't want this functionality, then I suggest removing the entire package rather than just the startup link. Personally I don't use it anymore, its too battery hungry ... remove it and see what I mean ! Orange Support and Remote Notify are part of the Action Engine lock package. Your phone will function as normal without them, but I would seriously advise against removing them from the startup. They are jointly responsible for allowing the service provider to lock and backup your phone should it become lost or stolen! It is also the method by which the service provider supplies OTA updates. Remove these at your own risk ! MMSRegister and MMSNotify are part of the Jataayu jMMS package. Again, your phone will function without them, but don't expect to receive any SMS/MMS messages. :D At least until you send one yourself, at which point these processes will be automatically started. Bottom line, read the top line. :) Hope that helps. Alphaflux.
Guest FrankyG Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Thanks, useful info  I was going to uninstall CallerID anyway, not much point on a flip-phone is there! I might remove the newcont.exe and see what happens there... Cheers...
Guest alphaflux Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Yeah, I agree Caller ID is pretty darn useless with the flip functionality. As I say, removing it will dramatically improve you battery life too. As for newcont, go for it mate ... let me know how it goes though.
Guest FrankyG Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Done :!: Well it's started up OK, no adverse effects so far. I'll keep an eye on it though...fingers crossed  Did you notice all the IA apps were installed onto Phone memory? I'm gonna remove them all and stick them on the SD card, should leave much more space for homescreens/backgrounds etc...
Guest alphaflux Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Cool, I've done the same. :-) Word of warning though, you will need to modify the registry after the install to effect the changes. It seems that the IA installer ALWAYS assumes that the location will be IPSMProgram Files for registry entries, even if you specify the storage card as the installation path. The IA applications will function when you run them from the program menu, but anything which uses file associations to launch the applications (such as MMS insert picture) will fail until this is done.
Guest alphaflux Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Just be careful with newcont out of the picture, even if the phone seems to work, it may be responsible for something vital that isn't immediately obvious. Such as Orange Support (see above). Maybe someone else out there knows what this mystery application does ?

Ok, have you tried this yourself? Do you know which reg entries would need to be changed, I imagine a few? I'll have a search through the registry for IA and note the locations, I'll post them here as and when I've got the time to do so... unless you beat me to it
Guest alphaflux Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Yeah, I sure have. Sorry mate, looks like I beat you to it. Registry entires are as follows: (just modify IPSM to Storage Card) [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTIAAlbumFileshellopencommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTIAAlbumFileDefaultIcon] @="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTavifileShellOpenCommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTavifileDefaultIcon] @="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTgifimageDefaultIcon] @="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTgifimageShellOpenCommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTjpegimageShellOpenCommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTbmpimageDefaultIcon] @="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTbmpimageShellOpenCommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTwavfileDefaultIcon] @="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTwavfileShellOpenCommand] @=""IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" "%1"" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareIA StyleIPCAlbum] "Path"="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Album_V20.exe" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareIA StyleIPCCamera] "Path"="IPSMProgram FilesIA StyleIA AlbumIA_Capture.exe" Interestingly, take a look at this: (at least it gets that right hey!) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESecurityAppInstallMotorola - Album] "InstallDir"="Storage CardProgram FilesIA StyleIA Album" "Role"=dword:00000010 "Uninstall"="IPSMWindowsAppMgrMotorola - Album8000.tmp" Have fun. Guest Bobronco Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 I was wondering if you would know how to hack something for me. I have a MPX200 and want to turn off the name association for call display. meaning i want my phone to just display the number of the person calling and NOT try to find the name it goes with. I think this will fix the outlook contact problem. maybe it's in the registry. just a thought. peace Bobronco
Guest steeevc Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Just be careful with newcont out of the picture, even if the phone seems to work, it may be responsible for something vital that isn't immediately obvious. Such as Orange Support (see above). Maybe someone else out there knows what this mystery application does ? NewCont add the various 'Orange Operator' and 'Smartphone Help' entries to your contacts, so even if you delete them the next time you switch on your phone they come back! I didn't really want all of these in mine so I removed NewCont.
Guest themoff Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 Orange Support and Remote Notify are part of the Action Engine lock package. Your phone will function as normal without them, but I would seriously advise against removing them from the startup. It is also the method by which the service provider supplies http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=102618>OTA updates. Remove these at your own risk !Ooops, I just read this 10 seconds after deleting them.... I'm running a SIM-unlocked Orange phone on O2, so figured that anything with "orange" in the app name was redundant. Is it advisable for me to try and reinstate them? MMSRegister and MMSNotify are part of the Jataayu jMMS package. Again, your phone will function without them, but don't expect to receive any SMS/MMS messages. :) At least until you send one yourself, at which point these processes will be automatically started. I don't want to use MMS, so I deleted all this gubbins - but will this mean I don't get SMS either? :? TIA, Robin.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 The safest and easiest way to remove the jmms app and still use SMS etc is to do a hard reset this will remove the preinstalled apps that clutter up the phone enabling you to reinstall them from the cd onto the storage card. Just remember not to reinstall the jmms app as you do not want mms on your phone. Just remember to bck up your contacts first :)
