Bluetooth -> PC Usage help

I may be a bit naive, but this is what I expected to happen:

1) with the phone plugged in via a sync cable, PC always knows the phone is there and will sync upon change of address book etc on Outlook

2) with phone connected via Bluetooth the same happens...

BUT

When I walk out of range of BT and go for a ciggie, I would EXPECT the device and the PC to rebond (as BT is remaining active on both) and the devices to be able to carry on syncing etc without having to touch either the phone or the PC when I get back within range again....

But what happens is, when i return, even with BT active on both, I have to go back into ActiveSync on the phone and get it to connect again....

Is this how it is supposed to work? Am I expecting too much from BT?

The problem is that the PC doesn't know that you're going to be coming back after your quick smoke break, so it won' t hold the connection open - same applies to the phone.

It may be possible to write an application that periodically tells activesync to connect via bluetooth. If the devices are in range then it would connect, if not, bad luck, try again later. The app could have a defined schedule and time window so that it is not wasting battery power when you are not going to be anywhere near your PC.

Does anyone know how to do this?
