What to buy? What to do?

I have been an original SPV owner for almost a year now, and the time has come to potentially get a new phone via a new contract.

Overall, I have to say I've been happy with the SPV (although it has tested my patience on more than one occassion  )

The only choices in Smartphones on the market right now seems to be either the E200 (which seems to be plagued with many hardware related issues - 4-way joystick, battery-life etc.) or the MP x200 (which although impressive, still runs the soon-to-be outdated 2002 software)

The question is whether to choose one of these option, or wait for something else that is in the pipeline. It has been almost a year since a major rival to the original SPV has been launched, but I suspect that we will only have to wait a matter of months to be offered even more choice in smartphones.

To be honest, if the P900 accepted SD cards instead of those Memory Stick DUOs, I would have probably opted for that route. (Bloody corporate greed!)

I would be interested in hearing the views of the loyal smartphone owners who are in a similar situation?

Cheers.

In the same boat as you! Got my SPV last november, so over a year now. Was looking forward to the e200 until i found out about the processor and now the joystick. So i looked at the mpx200 and like you i thought the os will soon be outdated. I've looked around but can't really see any new smartphones due out soon. I think i'm going to get the update from Orange and wait untill next year. Shame i really wanted a new phone before xmas, you know like,

200mhz processor,

64mb ram,

internal camera capable of taking video at more than 8 frames a second,

8 way directional key pad/joystick,

a media player that has a forward and rewind,

WM2003,

etc etc etc

As time has gone on I can't understand the beef about the 4 way pad. The original Smartphone specification detailed a 4 way pad...and to be honest the original SPV annoyed me because you had to be really precise. (I don't play many games on my phones but it isn't going to effect all games, the battery life on the E200 is the main problem)

As for the 2002 operating system...the amount of stuff that is available now is more than enough to last you. And it is not as though all of a sudden development of 2002 software will be discontinued, especially as the US doesn't have a 2003 phone on the market yet. There is at least another year left in 2002 app development.

What's wrong with the MPx then? Unless you really want a camera and bluetooth I can't see anything bad about it. The specifications of the unit are the same as the E200 bar BT and camera, and the battery life is decent, certainly for a smartphone.

Rumour has it that the MPx200 will be able to be upgraded to WM2003.

However, still no integrated camera or BT, same 132MHz chip. :?

I would wait until the new year. The MPx220 is due sometime in the first quarter and it should have the lot.

What's wrong with the Treo 600 or (if the Memory Stick Duo was the only bad thing about the P900) the Nokia 6600?

By all accounts the Treo 600 is a great device - good build quality, handy size, bright screen. My personal reservation is that it runs Palm OS which I think is just awful.

And as for the 6600 - well, it's a Nokia isn't it?

Looks like its been overinflated and there'll be new one out in 3 months...

But seriously, do a search for Pagemakers comparison with the E100 to get a better idea of its limitations.

Well, i didn't want the e200 and i wasn't going to get the mpx200 but after reading so many good reviews of the mpx200, the difference from the original SPV which i have and the fact that the mpx220 is still a while off yet, i decided to go for it, the mpx200. Should be here on wednesday.

looking forward to getting it. I have 7 days to see if i'm happy, got it free on an upgrade!

The only good thing about the MPX200 is that it 's a free upgrade.

I don't like the look or feel of it compared to my original SPV.

I think the only options worth having now are Nokia 6600, Treo600, or if you want decent phone, get a Motorola V500/600.

I was like you. I got an E200 but then took it back cos of all the problems and swapped for an MPX200.

I have to say I am very happy with the Moto. Battery life is good and it is a joy to use.

I am in the same boat aswell. I've had a SPV since last November and its served me well. I can put up with its slow menus and it has crashed just once in the whole year. I get about 40 hours of use before a recharge and everything I've loaded onto it seems to work fine. In fact nothing on the market has even come close to beating it. I have always got it on me so I use it extensively for work as well as just messing around with it when I'm bored. I seem to run my life on Outlook which has made me more organised in a way. Its just been a very enjoyable journey so far and I'm really not sure if upgrading to the E200 will be beneficial. I'm not too concerned about the joystick, but the battery life is very poor. It seems like a bigger phone too, and its not living up to expectations as yet. I dont get any buzzing on my phone and I dont need to panic if I forget to charge it every night. The question is, should I upgrade??

I phoned Orange today and almost upgraded for £100, which is what I paid last year for the SPV. But then I hesitated just as the operator wanted confirmation.

I not sure what to do?

skanna - If you current phone is fine then keep it. I'm sure there'll be more phone's out in spring, hold fire 'til then.

I have the MPx200 and it is seriously the best phone I have ever used. In my opinion better than the E200 (especially as I have no need for BT or Camera.) The battery life is really really good. The build quality is really solid and I basically love the phone.

Same here nCoder, after realizing i use the camera very rarely and the good reviews of the mxp200 i felt this may will do me until the mxp220, maybe at some point next year. As for the treo, i have to be honest i laughed when i first saw it  A brick in my opinion,it's only 12bit and it's just not sexy!. As for the nokia 6600, it does look pretty good but i really like windows on my mobile and for now i will be keeping it that way.

and now i look forward to receive my brand spanking new mpx200.........................

Well, enjoy the mpx folks.

Personally I don't like clamshell phones and use the camera too often to go without it (especially since upgrading from the SPV to the E200).

I'm also a bit of an upgrade freak in that I like to have the latest OS no matter how bugged it is.

The MPX200 seemed too... what's the word... safe?

...no that's not it...

...too... yes thats it, too dull!

hehe the wildside includes appauling battery life and appauling sound quality, two of the rather more important aspects of a phone I think you will agree

Point taken nCoder. Was expecting rather more angry responses then that. Oh well, there goes my my fun...

At the end of the day it's a matter of choice. Don't get me wrong, I expect the Motorola is a very complete and reliable SmartPhone, from the sound of it more then the SPV and as much so as the E200 (but without the bugs/issues?). Still, the E200 suited my needs where the MPX200 didn't.

I still haven't upgraded from my original SPV which I picked up this time last year.

I would like my next phone to have BT and an integrated camera - I hardly use the external camera with my SPV, simply because I always seem to forget to take it with me . BT will keep things legal in the car

However, BT and integrated camera severly limits my choice of phones at the moment. I am reading too many bad things about the E200, so I guess I'll wait a little longer :D

Treo 600 with SDIO bluetooth card? Drivers are 'meant' to be available for Palm OS 5 in Q1 '04.
