An Open Request to Mr Orange

Hi there Mr O

I know this is a little devide specific but I figured placing it in this directory would be more likely to attract your attention :D

I'd like to draw your attention to a little problem with the MPx200 here in the UK on Orange... I say in the UK it could be the same on other Orange networks in Europe but I can't say for sure, but it doesn't seem to be on the US handsets on AT&T... If I could direct your attention here and also here U will get an idea of what the problem is...

Basically having talked to a friend at Orange and gone thru some testing it would appear that the phone when turned off/on attaches to the GSM network perfectly however it fails to attach to the GPRS network correctly, (i.e. on power up the large 'G' symbol that denotes GPRS is available does not appear), until the user attemps a GPRS connection, at which time it will attach perfectly and then remain attached, (i.e. the large 'G' then appears and remains there denoting the GPRS connection is available)... It would appear, form the fact that it is not a universal problem with the handset accross the world where it is available, that this is most likely an issue with the firmware/software for the Orange network only!

I was wondering if U could look into this and maybe give us your findings or any solution U may be able to come up with... I know this is really a very minor functionality issue and as such is not a major bug or problem but it can be an annoyance if U turn the phone off or wander out of GPRS coverage and then forget to manually attach to the GPRS network afterwards... especially if U need to be in constant e-mail contact with people :)

Thanx in advance Mr O... I'll wait to hear what U may find out with respect to this issue :D

It may be that when you first switch the phone on the local BTS does not have GPRS enabled for some reason, and this is why you are not seeing the 'G' appear on the screen.

If GPRS works when you try to make a GPRS call then I don't see the problem. Your MPX200 seems to be working fine.

My SPV on the other hand, if it attaches to a BTS without GPRS enabled, and I attempt a GPRS call, then no connection will be possible until I reboot the phone and attach to a BTS with GPRS enabled.

I am hoping that the 1.61 update may resolve this problem.

I wish it were that simple but testing I have conducted along with a friend at Orange has indicated pretty conclusively that it is the handset that is not attaching itself to the GPRS network where it does attach to the GSM network... and judging from responses to posts elswhere here and on other forums it's not just handset specific, (i.e. a flaw in my handset), but would seemingly be affecting pretty much all Orange handsets!!!

And as a rule it's not really a BIG problem but if U use the handset in 'Automatic' mode in the data settings the phone won't attempt to synchronise e-mail via GPRS from switch on unless U have made a GPRS connection in order for it to recognise GPRS is available!!! Like I said it's just a minor functionality issue rather than a glaring bug

Bonzo, you main complaint here seems to be the fact that you may loose email connectivity due to the fact that you don't have a GPRS connnection. I know from the threads in the MPx200 forum that you should now be able to leave your internet connection set to auto without any problems. For your own peace of mind try the following.

1. Ensure that you email it set to auto syncronise every 15 mins

2. Turn off your phone.

3. Turn it on again.

4. Open your inbox but do not check for new mail, then go to your home screen.

5. 20 mins later (I giving you an additional 5 mins here to make a cup of tea and drink it) check your phone to see if the GPRS symbol has appeared.

It works without fail on my phone every time, try it on yours and see. As a previous SPV owner you should realise that the mail client won't attempt to auto synchronise until the inbox has been opened for the first time whether you have a GPRS connection or not.

Just tried it again myself using setup 2 suggested by Martin in the MPx200 forum, the G symbol appeared all by itself when the phone tried to check for email.

Yep just treid it myself as U suggested and U were right... worked like a charm... although I didn't have the cup of tea

I never fail to amaze myself in the things I don't try or forget to do... Guess I must be getting old & forgetful... and I must've been too eager to find a fault where there wasn't one

Many thanx Shulfie

You probably just can't believe that there is finally a smartphone that works as it should do (well almost, there are a few bugs in there yet but nothing too show stopping)
