Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Can anyone recommend a good low price desktop PC? Not too fussed about flat screen monitors, and will be mainly using it for surfing and checking e-mail. Cheers!
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 This PC from time for a cool £700. Absolute bargain and comes with good quality harware brand names. AMD, ATI, SeaGate etc. <<>> spacecowboy
Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Nice machine Cowboy, but I am talking entry level here mate! Basically sub £500 - something that ain't no great shakes in terms of processor or graphics, but something reliable and relatively good build quality.
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Ok - if these guys cant do you a good deal on an entry level PC - then I dont know who will lol :?: They are a respectable company up here in Edinburgh and its where I buy my media consumables from. Theres good quality specs for £500 - £550 that match your specification and theres room for expansion  <<>>
Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Them's is some pretty good deals! What's the pecking order amongst processors? I know that Pentiums are the Daddys, but what's next - Celeron, Duron or Athlon?
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Athlon FX are probably better than Intels IMO - After that comes the Athlon XP which I use and Duron next. Intel Celerons are a waste of time in a desktop - mainly used for laptops. Hope this helps spacecowboy
Guest Emad Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Blimey you're spending a lot. I'd say build your own for the best deal, nforce mobos are a must. Failing that, try hte configurator at minimum spec on www.savastore.com or www.multivision.co.uk for cheapo comps Always ebay too - some sellers there with multithousand recommendations.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Well, basically I have a work laptop which I do all my power stuff on, I essential just want an e-mail/Internet terminal for surfing on, hence the Scrooge budget. Plus I can get all the accessories I want from work, The idea is that I can play with it and teach myself some PC building without having to cry to the MD when it all goes tits up. Cowboy - cheers for the info on the processors. So Athlon/Duron yes, Celeron no no?
Guest spacecowboy6982 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Its got to be the AthlonXP. Start with a solid foundation and you cant go wrong. Make sure if your going for a fast and heavy processor that the cases power supply is at least 300W
Guest Emad Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 If you want to build I'd recommend the following for a future proof workstation: ASUS nForce2 mobo (includes sound/LAN etc) at least 256 mb memory - £30? geforce4 440mx with heatsink - £30? 60 gb hd (get an excelstor from dabs.com or ebuyer.com - 3 year warranty) - £40? AthlonXP of your choice - I have a £50 2500XP overclocked to 3200XP levels fine in my shuttle, fun to play with. A 1700XP is a mad overclocker too case of your choice A dvd-dual rewriter is about £80-90 and a damn good investment considered a dvd/cd-rw combo drive is about £40.. Again ebuyer, dabs and microdirect Any processor of the current breed will do e-mail/surfing fine, even a via one  durons and celerons will render web pages just fine - 512mb ram will help out lots. You should be able to build your own comp for around £200-300 excluding monitor - just remember the nforce mobo.. You can stick a duron in at the start and upgrade as appropriate.
Guest morpheus2702 Posted December 10, 2003 Report Posted December 10, 2003 Excellent guys, I have an idea of what I'm looking for now. Cheers.

Plenty of room for expansion 6 x USB2 ports Cons: No Modem No Monitor Only a CD/DVD reader Linux OS.
