Orange authorised reseller trying it on...

I just received a cold call on my SPV from someone claiming to be from an Orange authorised reseller.

He told me that my name had come up on his system saying that my contract was due to end (it is  ) and that he could offer me a free upgrade to a... to a... a ... a Nokia!

However, he couldn't tell me who I was (so much for my details coming up on his screen  )

This is not the first time I have had these cold calls, but does anyone know where these companies get my number from? Or are they dialling random numbers? I wouldn't mind the oportunity to fight back!

I have also had about four of these calls in the last week.

Each of them offered me a Nokia. When I asked how much to upgrade to an E200 they quoted me between £190-£300 even though my contract is now over the 12 month period.

I saw something on watchdog on a topic similar to this (cold calling people selling cheaper care packages, I think)

All a scammer has to do is buy a phone - that'll give them an orange phone number, and thanks to the way blocks of new numbers get allocated together, they instantly know a good chunk of new orange customers whose contracts will all expire in a year's time

Pretty crafty, really

What made me chuckle was that he was selling the Nokia as a better upgrade becuase it had "polyphonic ringtones..."

If he knew anything about my current phone (SPV) he would know that polyphonic ringtones ain't gonna convince me to give up my wav files

Seriously though - is this type of cold calling illegal? The person who called me didn't know what phone I had but more importantly didn't know who I was. So obviously they are telephoning random blocks of numbers.

I have had three of these calls over the past year (the first one was 1 month after I signed up to my first contract - imagine my surprise after I was told my contract was nearly finished!).
