Guest spv_dman Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 From the author of Oxios To Do list comes another great application! "Oxios Hibernate attempts to release as much memory as possible without damaging the internal state of the Smartphone." Have you ever wondered why memory usage isn't freed up even if you've closed all the applications running on your phone? Well this tiny app will do the trick in restoring the physical memory! Best of all it's free! I've tried this and it works! It's advisable to add this to speed dial :D Download it here.
Guest dinoalbert Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Posted from my SmartPhone! Does it work like SpaceMaker Lite? pareho lang sila o may difference?
Guest spv_dman Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 It's different. Spacemaker Lite frees up storage space while Oxios Hibernate restores physical memory. Parang Disk Storage vs. RAM kung ikukumpara mo with desktop PC.
Guest dinoalbert Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Posted from my SmartPhone! ah ok. tnx spv_dman!
Guest dobby_gobby_man Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 so... ok lang na install ko sa phone ko? walang mawawala or masisirang applications?
Guest spv_dman Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Twice already I've experienced soft resets. Never did I had that problem in the five months I'm using my SAP. I don't know if this is just coincidence but it happened when I started using Oxios Hibernate. Attention to the author. Maybe a bug :?
Guest BrAGoL Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 @spv_dman do you really figured it out that it was the Oxios Hibernate?
Guest spv_dman Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 D ko lang sure totie, pero kutob ko ito nga yung salarin. Nagpost na ako sa main forum regarding this. Siguro the best way to find out is to wait for the others who are using this app. Im sure it's still in it's beta stage and there might be bug fixes along the way.
Guest BrAGoL Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 siguro nga bug niya yun... pero so far, wala pa naman ako na-e-experience na ganun sa phone ko... eniwey, thanks for informing us...
Guest dinoalbert Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 soft reset lang ba? at least hindi hard reset
Guest sonborj Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 It's different. Spacemaker Lite frees up storage space while Oxios Hibernate restores physical memory. Parang Disk Storage vs. RAM kung ikukumpara mo with desktop PC. Â  So how does it differ from Quickclose which also frees up memory space used by Apps?
Guest spv_dman Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 So how does it differ from Quickclose which also frees up memory space used by Apps? It's different. Quickclose terminates programs in the background but it doesn't totally frees up the memory used up by these program. As the author claims, oxios hibernate can do that.
Guest rodnav Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 @* so what's the final verdict on this app? should we use it or not? if it really causes soft resets, then i don't think i'll install it just yet.
Guest spacemonkey Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 An answer to the question, "What's the difference between this app and XXXX?". Basically on your phone any app you have opened that didn't let you explicitly "exit" stays open and running in the background. When the system gets low on resources (less than 32kb left free or something) then it will send WM_HIBERNATE messages to the apps. If it still doesn't have enough resources it sends WM_KILL messages to the apps. When an app receives a WM_HIBERNATE message it should release as much memory as it can but stay running. In practice a lot of apps don't do anything on WM_HIBERNATE. When an app receives a WM_KILL message it will close and release all it's resources. The different closeing applications programs: SP Task Manager: Sends WM_KILL to specific apps or all non system apps thereby closing them and releasing all memory. XBar: Sends WM_KILL to all non system apps (or all excluding the selected one) thereby closing them and releasing all memory. QuickClose: Tells the operating system that it needs 20Mb of memory. The operating system then responds by sending WM_HIBERNATE messages to all apps, when this doesn't free up 20Mb of memory the system sends WM_KILL messages to all apps thereby closing them and releasing all memory. Oxios Hibernate: Sends WM_HIBERNATE messages to all apps. The apps remain open but free up as much memory as the programmers of the individual apps progreammed them to release. The benefit of the Oxios approach is that it is less agressive and leaves the apps running, in the case of apps like iMeter which need to be always on this is very beneficial. The other approachs will all free more memory but they will also close everything in a very agressive manner. Which is right for you? It's up to the individual, but to be honest, most applications and games work fine without worrying about closing everything down, it's only if you are using some of the more edge of the phones performance type apps like emulators and some games that it makes a real difference.
Guest dinoalbert Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 wow clear explanation...thanks, spacemonkey! that made sense
Guest SmartGuy Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 @spacemonkey do you happen to know what is causing the 'soft reset' they are experiencing? thanks.
Guest SmartGuy Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 @spacemonkey BTW, thanks for the very clear explanation of the different apps. It will help newbie users like me what app will suit us best
Guest caio1 Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 On a classic SPV how much should be the free mem after "hibernating"? After boot up and with just inbox open in background I have 7800kb free after using hibernate. Thank you, Caio
Guest Lopio Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Ive been using Hibernate for 3 days now so far no soft reset yet
Guest SmartGuy Posted January 2, 2004 Report Posted January 2, 2004 hi guys, just want to post my comments on the app. so far it is working really fine. I do not experience any problem with it specially the soft reset thing. it works great with my SP Free Mem as well. Good luck to you all!
