Little GPRS G doesn't go away

Hi,

First day with my new E200 and everything seems great so far. One curiousity though, once it makes a GPRS connection the little G doesn't ever seem to go away!

On the old SPV pressing hang-up would drop the connection and the G would go, I'm slightly concerned this phone is keeping it alive. While I guess there isn't any data being transferred I guess the battery is going to suffer!

Is this expected behaviour? I did see a menu option somewhere that had a 1 min idle time setting before it would drop the connection, is this related?

if you hold down the "home" button on the keypad of the phone a menu will pop up with an option to disconnect GPRS, just select that and the little G will go away :lol:

So what's the thinking behind this feature then? And what's the difference between "disconnect GPRS" and "detach GPRS" ?

There is a thread about it somewhere in this forum, try a search , and i'm not sure what the difference between detach GPRS and disconnect GPRS is....

i guess the problem with the G not vanishing is the ROM version, even with the Tanager the G sign vanishes when i use an old ROM version, upon changing ROM, the G wont vanish easily.

iirc detach removes your gprs link (not active link) from the network and needs a hard reboot to allow you to use gprs again. Disconnect just unlinks the current connection (little g goes, big g stays).

so does the G symbol on top of the phone means that the GPRS is on? if its true does having it on means hammering the battery life? How do we turn it off?

I assume that Orange have not included a GPRS attach in the menu :?

You should also be able to GPRS attach by turning radio off & on (or airplane mode on and off).

Yes, sorry, turning it off and on again is how i reattach. Martins Flight mode trick sounds like it should work too!

Not according to microsoft :) Generally, gprs is per MB, whether you're connected or not is irrelevant to your bill - that's certainly the case with orange.

Of course you then get people hogging all the available gprs slots... but that's a story for another day

I've only two problems with that...

a) An inherent distrusted of Microsoft OS's when it comes to the secret sending of data

Actually, with the original SPV there were complaints that you couldn't stay signed in on MSN Messenger when you locked the phone (pressing the red handset button disconnects gprs hence disconnects messenger). The gprs staying connected is to ensure gprs can be maintained for applications like messenger even when the phones locked...

I think it was a good move.

Oh, and this is in no way related to any problems the SPV or E100 had with delayed disconnection when pressing the red handset (the E200 doesn't share much in common with the older phones).

even if i detach gprs and the "g" goes away, every time i turn off my phone and turn it on again the "g" comes back. is there a way to get rid of the "g" symbol permanently until i actually want it?

Chithouse - the large G is indicating that you are in a GPRS coverage area. You are not 'connected' with just the big G visible in the top of the screen. only when the smaller G by the signal strength is visible are you 'connected ' and costing money.

If you Detach GPRS, the big will go away but come back on each reset. If you keep detaching, you will not be able to determine if you have GPRS coverage when you need it. Geddit?
