Microsoft to withdraw Outlook 2000

Adapted from BBC news online:

Microsoft is to stop selling some of its older products including Windows 98, Windows NT 4 and Outlook 2000.

The decision was made because the programs contain code outlawed under a legal deal with rival Sun Microsystems. That agreement came out of a dispute over the licensing of the Java script in the programs and has led Microsoft to stop distributing and selling products containing the disputed version of the language.

------------

SO what will MS ship with smartphones now? Will we get Outlook XP as standard do you think?

NT4 has not been sold (or supported) for at least 2 years. Before the flaming starts a Windows 2000 Prof or Win XP Prof also includes NT4 license so buying the newer version also provides a *license* for NT4.

I think that dropping Win 98 has nothing to do with this; it is an old system that they no longer want to support.

As for Outlook 2000, it has been superseeded by Outlook XP which, in turn, has been superseeded by Outlook 2003. They are just reducing their support for older products (hence, making you buy newer ones!)

I wasn't really getting at the Windows issues. It was more to do with the fact that they will be ceasing the sale of Outlook 2000, which is what the current crop of smartphones ship with, along side ActivSync.

My question was, what will Microsoft start shipping instead? My new MPx200 came with Outlook 2000, but if this is no longer legal, I was wondering what it will be replaced with in the box.

They may be withdrawing sale of Outlook 2000 but I somehow doubt that they will be recalling (and hence refunding) all sold copies of it! So stop worrying!

I wasn't worrying, I was hoping I could get a free copy of Outlook XP!
