Delays logging onto pop servers with E200??

Hi all,

When I use my E200 to access the Orange (UK) pop email server the phone says "Connecting" for up to 3 mins. It then connects and downloads email as normal. I also have another E-Mail account on the phone and that has the same delays then downloads normal. My normal internet GPRS connection on the phone makes a connection in a few seconds, it just seems to be the email client that has the "connecting" delay. Just wonderd if anyone else has the same delay when connecting to POP servers.

Cheers...............................................

Yup!!

Exactly the same for me m8!

At least it does connect in the end - my e100 never did!

Very very true, at least it does connect!! Cheers for trying neway!

My original SPV never connected to GPRS at all. So I suppose a delay is better than no connection. Needs sortin' tho. Could be summat a silly as a setting somewhere, you never know wi' Micro$oft.

Maybe this is a DNS delay.

Does putting the IP address of the POP server int here make it any quicker?

(To find the IP address of your POP server - connect to the internet, from a command prompt type PING followed by the name of your POP server [ENTER] and then it should return the IP address back.)

I put the IP address in and it connected faster.

Subsequent connections to my POP server has been lightning fast - even after a reboot.

The whole problem could also be the Orange Network being overloaded or knackered - which is getting to be a regular occurance!!

Just an update to this post.......

I have put the IP of my pop servers into the e-mail settings and it didn't make any differance for me on either of my email accounts. It still takes about two to three mins to connect then it works. When it has finally connected and downloaded emails, the gprs stays active, and it logs onto both of my pop servers instantly the next time I try but only if I keep that gprs connection live. If I disconnect and reconnect I'm back to square one! Sorry for all the detail but I think its best to give as much as possible and maybe, just maybe "They" can fix it.

Thanx for every1's input tho.......................

Can't say I'm getting this problem - if I detach my GPRS and then reconnect - it is not as quick but it still only takes about 20 seconds to get the "Logging on..." message.

I'm thinking this must be more of a Network problem than phone based issue.

Think it might be an Orange E-Mail issue. Since fiddling a bit more last nite, my NTL email account works in about 10 to 20 secs after putting the IP address in of the pop server. However, the Orange E-mail still takes the 2 to 3 mins to login. When I ping my NTL server all is ok, all the packets are recieved back to my PC. When I ping the orange server all the packets are lost. Ne1 know why this could be even tho the e-mail server does respond eventually and on my PC in outlook my orange email downloads normal from pop.orange.net within a few seconds. I do get an IP when pinging the orange pop server but just no responce.

This means that the smtp Orange server is registered in the Internets DNS servers but is programmed NOT to respond to PING requests. It does not help us very much. The actual dns record of smtp.orange.net is smtpout.orange.net. If I put this name in my phone and it still takes ages to connect. Likewise if I put the IP address in it takes ages too (193.35.131.155).

The orange.net smtp server will only act as an smtp relay from a GPRS connection - which is what I would expect.

I wonder whether the server would reply to a ping if you tried to ping it from your computer having connected to the internet from your GPRS phone?? Then we could see whether or not the server is replying in a speedy manner to smtp traffic.

Again - I'm tempted to think this is an Orange Network issue - I reckon their SMTP server is taking an age to allow connection.

Hey - but what do I know??

When I download emails, isn't that the pop server that I connect to? I say this coz u havn't mentioned it. Doesn't the smtp server accept emails sent from my phone/pc only? Do you think it's worth me ringing Orange to ask them why it's only their Email system and no-one else? Isn't there a util run from the command prompt in windows that tells you how many "hops" you are doing to get from your PC to the destination gateway? Do you think the orange email system could be redirecting us all over the place?

Yes the POP is where you pick-up your emails. Most of the time this will be OK as you don't seem to have a problem wiuth the POP.

HOWEVER - when your email software connects to try and send and receive mail it checks to see that the servers exist - i.e. it may well be trying to talk with the smtp server before it tries to logon to your POP server.

In my Outlook if I test my email setting (on my PC) it checks comms with the SMTP server prior to checking with the POP server - this may be why there is a delay. ON the SMARTPHONE it SENDS mail beofre it receives it.

I think a call to Orange would be a good idea - hopefully you'll get through to someone who knows what they are talking about.

Now I understand. Thanx for takin the time to explain. Just as an update to this, I have set the phone to use my broadband link on "pass-through" and it's fine on all email settings. Orange Email takes 10secs to download when NOT using the phones GPRS connection. Back onto GPRS and the delay continues - but only with orange E-mail (providing I enter the IP into the other providers email settings they have little delay).

Cheers....

Update!! Warning the following statement is likely to baffle the fcuk out of you!!!!!!

This problem is now sorted! How, did I hear you say. 'twas was a cold dark, windy night, rain lashed against the window pain. I heard thumping upstairs, a loud groaning............what could this be I thought?! Perhaps it's the Cheeky Girls, a shudder crawled down my spine! Any way to stop digressing for a moment......I set my E200 to pass through and collected my e-mails through the pop client. The e-mails downloaded immediately! Now, ever since then and through normal GPRS my e-mail client connects and downloads e-mails within 10 secs everytime!!!!! How weird is that! Nearly as weird as my tale of woe above!

Have a proper Bo crim! (Bo)!
