Orange WAP and Orange GPRS - difference?

Under Settings -> Data Connection -> Menu -> Edit Connections -> GPRS Connections, there are three options:

Orange GPRS (Connects to The Internet, orangeinternet)

Orange MMS and

Orange WAP (Connects to The Internet, orangewap)

When using IE, I can connect to WAP sites and ordinary HTTP (HTML) sites with no problem using both Orange GPRS and Orange WAP. In fact, I can't see any difference in behaviour between the two, which means I simply haven't looked hard enough.

So, what's the difference?

GPRS uses the "orangeinternet" Access point (APN), and WAP uses "orangewap".

They are billed differently, so that's why it's important to check if you add a bundle or access pack to your account, what access point you use!

Please excuse my confusion here...

So functionionally they are the same, the only difference being the APN? Now I've looked at Orange's web site and I can only find stuff that says "GPRS costs £X per meg" etc. It makes no reference to the access point being used. I guess what I need to ask is: do the Orange bundles relate to the protocol used to retrieve the data or the access point? It can't be both because I've shown that you can get all services from both access points.

I know that Orange have WAP bundles such as Orange World, but from what I read in in this forum, that's nothing to do with the access point, just the protocol used to retrieve the data: WAP or HTTP/HTML. If I'm wrong, then when some people say "the Orange World bundle is for WAP only", all you have to do is set your GRPS Connection to "Orange WAP" and you can do email, ordinary HTTP and WAP over this connection? In my language, that would make "WAP only" mean "HTTP/HTML, WAP, Email etc etc".

Oh dear, I'm very confused! :?

Ditto, can't remember the amount of times I've put bundles on my account and then been charged for GPRS transfer.

At the moment I'm on Access World 5 and made tech support promise me it was for the orangeinternet APN and made them put a note on my account stating this.

I believe the difference is "orangewap" apn will only allow you access to wap only pages, such as pages viewed on conventional wap enabled handsets, I think it's pages made using XML/WML (dont do web page design so don't know that for certain). These pages are very basic and contain very few pictures, if any at all, depending on the browser version of the handset. The "orangeinternet" apn will allow you full access to the full internet if your handset supports it such as the SPV. You will also be able to connect your palm top, lap top etc to your mobile phone (acting as a modem using IR or bluetooth) using this apn and browse the full internet. An example of this is when I use my T68i, I use the orangewap apn to view basic wap pages but to use the email client on the T68i I need to use the orangeinternet apn. Orangemms is also an apn set up by orange just for mms. In short, and ignoring me waffling on, they are data gateways. Orangewap is a wap only gateway. Orangeinternet is the full internet gateway. If ne1 else has anything to add please add to this thread coz this is only my understanding and would love to know if it's not accurate.

Hope this helps......

Nice theory, but that's not what happens in practice. It is possible to send and receive emails and do HTTP/HTML stuff through the orangewap APN. I've just installed the all-thingy GPRS counters and indeed the counters on the "Orange WAP" GPRS connection do go up as I surf and email. So, it would seem that there's no difference between orangeinternet and orangewap at all except the cost?

I'd advise people who are put off the Orange World deal on the basis that (as many have said) only supports WAP might want to give email and ordinary browsing first via orangewap and if it works, then it should be OK (I think) Better still, can someone else try the same test as I did and verify I'm not going nuts? :!:

Of course, I'm assuming that Orange don't detect the type of traffic going through their supposed WAP-only gateway. :D

Maybe, I cant connect to the "real internet" using my phone as a modem or collect e-mails using "orangewap" apn. I can only download emails and connect to the internet when my phone is set to "orangeinternet" apn. Can you test this on another phone other than the SPV? My original SPV (havn't tried on mi new E200 ) used to switch between aps's as needed. If I wo browsing an internet page, such as orange home page for example, and changed page to view something like wap.yahoo.co.uk then the little G by the signal indicator would switch off then back on as it changed apn's. I do however accept what you are saying, that it could be possible on orange to access both wap stuff and internet stuff through both gateways. After all I am far from an expert.

Good point. I thought that was what "automatic" was supposed to do, but I wouln't put it beyond MS to have all the non-automatic options means something like "this is what the user would prefer, but we know best and will make the change if necessary". I'll have to dig out my old T68i and give it a go, though it might take a bit of time to re-acquaint myself with the phone.

Where did you get the GPRS counter thingy?

Ta,

There's two available

All-locations GPRS traffic counter which is about £10 (I think) available from the usual places

and

iMeter (free)

Use the search to find them

from what i can tell ...

on my good old 7650 i could surf wap over gprs, but the good old 7650 couldn't recognise html files so couldn't display 'em..

if i wanted to download e-mails or use messenger software on 7650 it would be charged as GPRSdata (not Wap over GPRS)

now on e200 i think the GPRS data is the "orangeinternet" setting ..

whilst Wap over GPRS is the "orangewap" setting..

the only reason why you could view normal internet pages as well over wap is because IE on the spv can recognise HTML,XML etc...

thats my theory ... but then again i might be wrong... Somebody summon Mr Orange!!

Same old story again here! :? Sort your act out Orange.

I've just changed my GPRS package yesterday whilst upgrading my SPV to an MPx200, went for Orange World Access 3 which includes 3Mb plus some 10 SMS & 20 MMS's per month, okay, fine?

No, not fine, I then find all the threads here on the ever helpful Modaco saying that I will get charged extra for using http internet and received e-mail via orangeinternet.

So I've just rang 156 to confirm what the world access pack includes, and she confirmed that it includes all GPRS internet and e-mail access for both handsets I will have (when the MPx200 comes), and infact she had just confirmed the same yesterday with her supervisor for another SPV user.

So I pulled the usual "can you put a note on my file" crack so I have some comeback if I do get charged, like many people have! She went away and checked and then said "yes, okay" I can put a note on your file!

Hmm, very seriously confused here...

I'm running a SPV E200 and have the Orange World Access Pack 3. My settings are

Start > Settings > Data Connections Internet Connection = Orange GPRS

WAP Connection = Orange GPRS

Start > Settings > Data Connections > MENU > EDIT > GPRS Connections > Orange GPRS > Connects To = The Internet access point = orangeinternet

Start > Settings > Data Connections > MENU > EDIT > GPRS Connections > Orange WAP> Connects To = The Internet access point = orangewap

Are these settings right for the World Access Pack or am I going to get billed for things I shouldn't be?

Also when using my old Nokia 6210 I used to be able to access a site called "Where's my nearest" on WAP, can't appear to access it on the E200 but people with Nokia's can, any ideas here as well?

Thanks,

Nick.
